Model type
A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.
Model size (longest side)
Height
Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.
Mesh detail
More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.
Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A modeling application such as Blender or MeshLab may require a PLY mesh, while the source asset is available only as a Photoshop document. Converting it requires turning PSD pixels into geometry, usually as a height map, because a normal PSD does not contain polygon vertices.
What the PSD format is
PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s layered raster-document format. It stores pixel data, layers, masks, transparency, adjustment effects, paths, and sometimes metadata; Photoshop creates it, and programs such as GIMP can open many PSD files. In 3D workflows, a PSD is normally used as a texture, concept image, or grayscale height map rather than as a mesh.
A standard PSD does not provide the vertex, face, normal, and color attributes required by a PLY model. Layer names, blend modes, masks, and adjustment layers therefore cannot be preserved as 3D structure by a direct format conversion.
What the PLY format is
PLY, also called Stanford Polygon File Format, stores polygon geometry as lists of vertices and faces. Optional vertex properties include normals, RGB colors, alpha values, confidence values, and other application-defined fields.
PLY is common in 3D scanning, point-cloud processing, research software, MeshLab, and modeling workflows that need a simple mesh interchange format. It supports ASCII and binary encodings; binary files are smaller and faster to load, while ASCII files are easier to inspect manually.
How to actually convert PSD to PLY
For a usable result, treat the PSD as a height map and generate a subdivided surface in Blender:
- Open the PSD in Photoshop and isolate the layer that defines elevation. Convert it to grayscale with Image → Mode → Grayscale, flatten visible content if necessary, and export it with File → Export → Export As to
heightmap.png. White areas will normally become high points and black areas low points. - In Blender, create a plane with Add → Mesh → Grid. Set enough X and Y subdivisions to represent the smallest feature that must appear in the mesh; a low-resolution grid cannot reproduce fine PSD detail.
- With the grid selected, add a Displace modifier. Create a new texture, choose an image texture, and open
heightmap.png. Set the modifier’s coordinates to UV if the grid has suitable UVs, then adjust Strength to control height and Midlevel to place the neutral elevation. - Apply the Displace modifier after checking the surface for spikes, holes, and excessive stretching. Use Object → Convert → Mesh if the generated object is not already a mesh.
- Export the mesh with File → Export → Stanford (.ply). Choose binary or ASCII encoding, enable vertex normals if the destination supports them, and enable vertex colors only when color data has been assigned to the mesh.
For a colorized model, keep the original PSD as a texture during modeling, then bake its appearance to vertex colors before exporting. PLY texture-image support varies between applications, so an external PSD or PNG texture should not be assumed to travel with the .ply file.
You can also submit the file to 101convert.com for free without installing software. An automated converter can produce a meaningful PLY only when it implements a defined image-to-height-map or image-to-mesh process; it cannot infer arbitrary 3D shape from ordinary layered artwork.
Quality and compatibility limitations
This process creates a relief surface, not a complete object. It has no automatically generated sides, back, thickness, watertight volume, or physically accurate depth unless those features are modeled separately. Add a solidify or extrusion step in Blender when the result must be printable.
Increasing grid resolution preserves more image detail but increases vertex count and PLY size. PSD blur, transparency, masks, and color adjustments should be finalized before exporting the height map because they directly change the generated geometry. Confirm the destination’s axis orientation, units, polygon support, and color-property requirements; PLY has optional properties, and different readers do not interpret every property identically.
