Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

3D scanners, CAD tools, and mesh viewers may require a .ply model, while the available .tga file is often a texture or heightmap. Because TGA stores pixels and PLY stores mesh geometry, a useful conversion requires interpreting the image as surface data rather than merely changing its filename extension.

What the TGA format is

TGA (Truevision Targa) is a raster image format used in 3D production for color textures, masks, heightmaps, normal maps, and render output. It supports RGB or RGBA pixels, commonly at 8 bits per channel, and can store uncompressed or run-length-encoded data.

Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, Substance 3D Painter, Photoshop, GIMP, game engines, and older rendering pipelines commonly create or read TGA files. In a modeling project, a TGA usually belongs to an existing mesh; it is not itself a 3D object.

What the PLY format is

PLY, also called Stanford Polygon File Format, stores polygon or point-cloud geometry. A mesh PLY can contain vertex positions, face indices, normals, vertex colors, and sometimes UV coordinates or other per-vertex properties. Files may be ASCII or binary.

PLY is commonly used by 3D scanners, photogrammetry applications, MeshLab, CloudCompare, Blender, and scientific visualization tools. It is useful when a program needs editable vertices and faces or when a scanned model must be exchanged without a proprietary project format.

How to convert TGA to PLY

Convert a grayscale TGA heightmap into a mesh with Blender

  1. Check that the TGA is a heightmap. A grayscale image can represent elevation; a normal map, diffuse texture, or ordinary photograph cannot define a unique 3D surface.
  2. Open Blender and remove the default cube. Add a sufficiently dense grid through Add → Mesh → Grid. Set the grid subdivisions to match the needed detail; a 512 × 512 grid produces about 262,000 vertices and can be demanding.
  3. With the grid selected, add a Modifier → Add Modifier → Displace modifier and choose New for its texture.
  4. Open the texture settings, set the texture type to an image or movie, and load the TGA with Open. Set the Displace modifier's Strength to the desired height and Midlevel to control which grayscale value remains at the base plane.
  5. Apply the Displace modifier after checking the result in solid view. Reverse the height direction or adjust the strength if dark and light areas produce the wrong relief.
  6. Export the selected mesh through File → Export → Stanford (.ply). Enable options such as Selection Only, Apply Modifiers, and normals when the target application supports them. Choose ASCII for easier inspection or binary for a smaller, faster file.

For a basic supported conversion without installing software, you can use the free converter on 101convert.com. It cannot infer meaningful mesh topology from an arbitrary TGA; use a heightmap-to-mesh workflow when the intended result is actual 3D relief.

Export an existing textured model instead

If the TGA is a texture for a model, open the original 3D project rather than converting the image. Export the model itself as PLY, then keep the TGA separately. PLY readers vary in their support for UV coordinates, material definitions, and external texture references, so the texture may not appear after export; baking the image into vertex colors can improve compatibility but loses texture resolution and may increase the file size.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • A TGA-to-PLY conversion cannot recover geometry that was never encoded in the image. A color texture becomes geometry only through an assumed method such as grayscale displacement, image-based depth estimation, or photogrammetry.
  • Each grayscale value becomes an elevation sample. Low-resolution images create blocky surfaces, while 8-bit heightmaps produce visible stepped levels on smooth, shallow terrain.
  • Transparent pixels, alpha channels, RGB color, and normal-map directions do not automatically become valid PLY geometry. Inspect and remove an alpha channel if it is being interpreted as height or masking the image.
  • PLY does not define a single universal material and texture workflow. Verify whether the destination accepts binary or ASCII PLY, triangle or polygon faces, normals, vertex colors, and UV data.
  • Set the mesh dimensions and displacement strength deliberately. TGA pixels have no inherent real-world units, so the exported PLY has no reliable physical scale unless you assign one during modeling.
