What the DFF format is

In 3D modeling, DFF usually means the RenderWare Geometry format, a binary format used by RenderWare-based games and their modding tools. Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, San Andreas, and other RenderWare applications commonly store game models as .dff files.

A DFF can contain meshes, vertex normals, texture coordinates, material references, object frames, and RenderWare-specific geometry data. The associated textures are usually stored separately, often as TXD files, so a DFF is not necessarily self-contained. Files are created by RenderWare exporters, game asset pipelines, and tools such as ZModeler or Blender with a RenderWare/DFF add-on.

What the PLY format is

PLY, also called Polygon File Format or Stanford Triangle Format, stores polygon meshes as elements such as vertices and faces. A PLY file can include positions, normals, colors, texture coordinates, and other per-vertex or per-face properties.

PLY is useful for mesh inspection, 3D scanning, research software, geometry processing, and applications that do not support proprietary game formats. Its ASCII form is readable and easy to debug; binary PLY is smaller and faster to load. PLY generally represents geometry rather than a complete game asset, so it is a poor replacement when animations, bones, collision data, materials, or scene hierarchy must be preserved.

How to convert DFF to PLY

Using Blender and the DragonFF add-on

1. Install a Blender version supported by the DragonFF add-on, which imports RenderWare assets including DFF files.
2. Enable the add-on in Edit → Preferences → Add-ons.
3. Open a new Blender scene and choose File → Import → DragonFF (.dff), then select the DFF file. If the model uses external textures, keep its related TXD or image files available to the add-on.
4. Inspect the imported object. Apply any required transforms with Object → Apply → All Transforms, and remove game-specific helper objects if they were imported.
5. Export the mesh through File → Export → Stanford (.ply). Choose ASCII for maximum compatibility or binary for a smaller file, and enable normals, UVs, and vertex colors when the target application supports them.
6. Open the resulting .ply in the destination program and verify face orientation, scale, normals, and texture coordinates.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Textures are not normally embedded. PLY may retain UV coordinates, but it does not automatically carry the DFF's TXD textures or game material definitions. Reconnect image textures manually in the destination application.
• Skeletons, skin weights, animations, collision meshes, object frames, LOD data, and RenderWare metadata are usually discarded because standard PLY is primarily a static mesh format.
• DFF files can contain multiple meshes or submeshes. The importer may create several objects, while the PLY exporter may combine them into one file; join or separate objects before export according to the target workflow.
• Game models may use unusual coordinate systems, units, triangle strips, or reversed winding. Check orientation and scale after import, then recalculate normals if faces appear invisible or shaded incorrectly.
• Some DFF files are compressed, encrypted, damaged, or generated for a particular game version. DragonFF or an online converter may not support every variant; an uncompressed, standard RenderWare DFF is the most compatible input.
