A DFF model often needs conversion when it must be edited in Blender, whose native project format is BLEND. Importing the DFF into Blender and saving the resulting scene creates a BLEND file that can preserve the editable geometry, materials, hierarchy, and scene data that the importer understands.

What the DFF format is

DFF is the binary RenderWare model format, commonly associated with Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, San Andreas, and other games built with RenderWare. Game asset tools, modding utilities, and exporters for applications such as 3ds Max or Maya can create DFF files.

A DFF can contain meshes, materials, object hierarchy, vertex colors, skinning data, and animation-related structures, depending on the game and exporter. Textures are often stored separately in TXD archives, so a DFF by itself may not contain the image files needed for a complete visual match.

What the BLEND format is

BLEND is Blender's native project format. It can store meshes, materials, textures, modifiers, armatures, animations, cameras, lighting, and scene settings in one editable project, subject to how the imported assets are configured.

BLEND is the suitable target when the model will be retopologized, textured, rigged, rendered, animated, or combined with other Blender scenes. Saving an imported DFF as BLEND also avoids repeatedly importing the original game asset.

How to actually convert DFF to BLEND

Using Blender with the DragonFF add-on

  1. Install a Blender version supported by the DragonFF add-on, then install the add-on through Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → Install.
  2. Enable DragonFF in the add-on list and open a new Blender scene.
  3. Use the DFF import command provided by the add-on, usually under File → Import, then select the .dff file.
  4. Choose the game or RenderWare settings required by the asset when the importer requests them. GTA game versions can use different geometry, material, coordinate, and skinning conventions.
  5. Import matching textures separately if they are supplied in a TXD archive. Extract or convert the TXD textures with a compatible game-asset tool, then reconnect image textures in Blender if the importer does not do so automatically.
  6. Inspect the model, object hierarchy, normals, armature, materials, and scale. Fix missing textures or reversed faces before saving.
  7. Choose File → Save As, select BLEND as the file type, and save the project.

For a no-install browser-based conversion, 101convert.com can convert the file for free. A Blender-based import is preferable when you need to inspect or correct geometry, materials, hierarchy, or textures rather than only obtain a converted file.

Quality and compatibility limitations

There is no universal DFF interpretation: game-specific RenderWare variants can store different material flags, collision data, bones, morph targets, and coordinate systems. An importer may therefore preserve the visible mesh while dropping unsupported game metadata.

Texture paths, TXD archives, shaders, reflection settings, and game-specific material effects commonly require manual reconstruction in Blender. Verify scale and axis orientation, apply or preserve transforms as appropriate, recalculate normals when faces appear dark or inside out, and check armature weights on skinned characters.

Keep the original DFF and any associated TXD files. The BLEND is an imported working scene, not a guaranteed lossless container for every RenderWare feature.
