SketchUp models use the SKP format, but Blender cannot normally open SKP files directly. Converting the model to BLEND lets you continue editing it in Blender, render it with Blender’s engines, or archive the scene in Blender’s native format.

What the SKP format is

SKP is the native project format of SketchUp, used for architectural models, interiors, furniture, site layouts, and other polygonal 3D scenes. SketchUp, SketchUp Pro, and compatible SketchUp web applications create SKP files; you commonly receive them from architects, contractors, designers, product libraries, or older SketchUp projects.

An SKP file can contain geometry, groups, component instances, materials, image textures, scenes, layers or tags, dimensions, and SketchUp-specific construction data. It is a project file rather than a generic interchange format, so other 3D applications may not preserve every feature.

What the BLEND format is

BLEND is Blender’s native project format. It can store meshes, object hierarchy, cameras, lights, materials, textures, modifiers, animation data, render settings, and scene collections in one editable project.

BLEND is suitable when the model must be rendered, animated, sculpted, retopologized, scripted, or combined with other Blender scenes. It preserves Blender-specific editing data after import, unlike an interchange file such as OBJ or COLLADA, but it does not preserve SketchUp’s native parametric behavior.

How to actually convert SKP to BLEND

Using the online converter

  1. Open the SKP-to-BLEND converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .skp file and choose BLEND as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the generated .blend file when processing finishes.
  4. Open the result in Blender and inspect the model, materials, object hierarchy, scale, and texture paths before using it in production.

This route is useful when SketchUp is unavailable, but automatic conversion may simplify unsupported SketchUp features or omit textures and scene data.

Using SketchUp and Blender

  1. Open the model in SketchUp and save a copy so the original SKP remains unchanged.
  2. Use File → Export → 3D Model and select FBX, OBJ, or DAE if that export is available in your SketchUp edition. FBX generally carries more scene and material information; OBJ is widely compatible but stores geometry and materials in separate files.
  3. For OBJ export, keep the generated .mtl file and texture images with the OBJ. For FBX or DAE export, retain any accompanying texture directory.
  4. In Blender, choose File → Import and select the matching format: FBX (.fbx), Wavefront (.obj), or Collada (.dae).
  5. Check the imported model’s size and orientation. Use Blender’s Item transform fields or Scene Properties → Units to correct scale when necessary.
  6. Relink missing images through File → External Data → Find Missing Files, then select the folder containing the exported textures.
  7. When the scene is correct, use File → Save As and save it as model.blend.

If SketchUp cannot export a format that Blender imports, use a desktop intermediary that can read the specific SKP version and write FBX, OBJ, or DAE, then import that interchange file into Blender.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • The conversion normally produces polygonal mesh geometry. SketchUp groups and components may become separate Blender objects, but SketchUp editing tools, dimensions, guides, styles, and parametric component behavior do not become native Blender features.
  • SketchUp faces are single-sided. Reversed faces can appear invisible or render incorrectly in Blender; inspect normals and use Edit Mode → Mesh → Normals → Recalculate Outside where appropriate.
  • Large architectural models may import as thousands of objects or excessive triangle counts. Remove hidden geometry and unused components in SketchUp before export, or join and organize objects in Blender after import.
  • Materials rarely transfer exactly. Rebuild complex SketchUp materials in Blender, especially transparency, reflection, bump mapping, and procedural textures.
  • Embedded or relative texture paths can break during export. Keep the exported model and texture folder together, then use File → External Data → Pack Resources in Blender to embed available resources in the BLEND file.
  • Test the exported result in the target Blender version, because importers and support for FBX, COLLADA, and SketchUp-generated data can change between versions.
