What the VRM format is
VRM is a glTF 2.0-based format for humanoid 3D avatars. A VRM package can contain meshes, textures, a humanoid armature, facial expressions, first-person settings, look-at behavior, spring bones, and avatar metadata.
VRoid Studio commonly exports VRM files, and Unity projects using the UniVRM package can create or edit them. VRM files are also used by avatar applications, virtual production tools, social platforms, and motion-capture software. The .vrm file normally packages the model and its referenced resources into one distributable file.
What the BLEND format is
BLEND is Blender’s native project format. It can store scene objects, meshes, armatures, materials, modifiers, cameras, lights, animations, shape keys, particle data, and Blender-specific settings in a single project file.
Use BLEND when the model needs continued editing in Blender, rendering with Blender, rig inspection, scene assembly, or archiving with Blender-native data. BLEND is not a general-purpose avatar interchange format, so applications that support VRM will not necessarily open a BLEND file.
How to actually convert VRM to BLEND
The most reliable desktop method uses Blender with the VRM Add-on for Blender. Install a version of the add-on compatible with your Blender release, then enable it through Edit → Preferences → Add-ons or the Blender Extensions interface, depending on the Blender version.
- Launch Blender and create or open the destination scene.
- Choose File → Import → VRM (.vrm). If the VRM import entry is missing, the add-on is not installed, enabled, or compatible with that Blender version.
- Select the source
avatar.vrmfile and confirm the import. - Check the imported armature, mesh objects, materials, textures, shape keys, expressions, and spring-bone behavior in the viewport. Apply any required Blender-side material or rig corrections before saving.
- To include external images and other referenced resources, use File → External Data → Pack Resources. This embeds supported resources in the Blender project.
- Choose File → Save As, name the project
avatar.blend, and save it.
For a conversion without installing software, the free converter on 101convert.com can process the file through a web browser. Download the resulting .blend file and inspect it in Blender because online conversion may not reproduce every VRM-specific feature.
Quality and compatibility limitations
VRM’s standard avatar data does not map perfectly to Blender data. The VRM add-on can import the model and much of its rig information, but VRM-specific shaders, toon outlines, look-at controls, spring bones, constraints, and expression systems may be represented by Blender-specific nodes or add-on data rather than identical native behavior.
Check transparent materials, normal maps, emission, facial shape keys, eye movement, hair physics, and texture paths after import. Rendering may differ because Blender’s shader system is not the same as Unity’s VRM shader implementations.
Saving as BLEND does not guarantee that the original VRM metadata remains exportable. If the avatar must later return to VRM, keep the original avatar.vrm and use the add-on’s VRM export function after verifying the required humanoid mapping, materials, expressions, and license metadata.
