VRM avatars are commonly accepted by virtual-world and VTuber software, while many game engines, animation packages, and modeling tools require FBX. Converting the model is useful when the avatar must be edited, rigged, animated, or imported into an FBX-based production pipeline.

What the VRM format is

VRM is an avatar format based on glTF 2.0. It packages a humanoid 3D character with meshes, textures, skeleton data, humanoid bone definitions, facial expressions, look-at settings, and often spring-bone physics.

VRM files are created or exported by applications such as VRoid Studio, Unity projects using UniVRM, and other avatar-creation tools. You encounter them when downloading a VTuber model, moving an avatar between virtual-world applications, or importing a character into Blender or Unity. VRM-specific features include metadata, expression presets, first-person settings, and secondary-motion configuration that ordinary FBX does not fully represent.

What the FBX format is

FBX is a proprietary Autodesk interchange format used for 3D meshes, materials, skeletons, cameras, lights, and animation. It is widely supported by Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max, Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, and many game and motion-capture pipelines.

FBX is preferable when a target application expects conventional skinned meshes and bone animation rather than a glTF-based avatar package. It can carry multiple objects, armatures, animation takes, and embedded or externally referenced textures, although support differs between FBX importers.

How to actually convert VRM to FBX

Using Blender

  1. Install a current Blender release and the VRM Add-on for Blender, making sure the add-on version supports the VRM 0.x or VRM 1.0 file you have.
  2. Open Blender and choose File → Import → VRM (.vrm). Select the file and let the add-on create the avatar, armature, materials, and supported VRM components.
  3. Check the imported model in the viewport. Confirm that the mesh is visible, the armature is present, textures are linked, and the character faces the expected direction. Replace unsupported VRM shaders with Blender Principled BSDF materials if the target application cannot read the imported shader setup.
  4. Select the avatar objects and choose File → Export → FBX (.fbx). Enable Selected Objects to avoid exporting cameras, lights, or unrelated scene objects.
  5. For a conventional game-engine export, use the default Blender axis convention of -Z Forward and Y Up, enable Apply Transform when the destination requires converted object transforms, and disable Add Leaf Bones under Armature.
  6. If the scene contains usable actions, enable animation baking and export the required actions. Test at least one animation after import because bone orientations and humanoid mappings can differ between applications.
  7. Use Path Mode: Copy in the FBX exporter when textures should travel with the export. The adjacent embed-media option can place textures inside the FBX, but some programs ignore embedded media; keeping a texture folder beside the FBX is more compatible.

For a no-install conversion, 101convert.com can convert the file online for free. A desktop workflow is preferable when you need to inspect materials, correct the armature, preserve animation, or control texture handling.

Using Unity

Unity can import VRM through UniVRM and export selected avatar objects through an FBX Exporter package. Import the VRM with UniVRM, select the generated avatar hierarchy, then use GameObject → Export To FBX. This route is useful when the destination is already a Unity project, but it requires more setup and may export Unity-generated material or prefab data differently from Blender.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • VRM metadata is lost: FBX does not standardize VRM license information, humanoid metadata, expression presets, first-person settings, or spring-bone definitions.
  • Physics usually needs rebuilding: VRM spring bones and collider groups are not ordinary FBX animation. Recreate them with the destination engine's physics or secondary-motion system.
  • Expressions may not transfer as expected: VRM blendshape presets can import as shape keys or actions, but names and drivers may need manual reconstruction.
  • Materials can change: MToon and other VRM shaders are not generally preserved as equivalent FBX materials. Reassign shaders, transparency modes, emission, and outline effects in the destination application.
  • Scale and orientation require testing: Confirm the target application's unit scale and forward axis. A model that appears rotated, too large, or too small usually needs transform correction or importer settings rather than mesh editing.
  • Check licensing: A VRM's usage terms are stored in its metadata or supplied by its creator. Converting the file does not remove those restrictions.
