A VRM avatar may need conversion when a 3D editor, game engine, or viewer accepts standard glTF but does not recognize VRM extensions. Blender can import the avatar and export a .gltf scene, while 101convert.com also provides free conversion without installing software.

What the VRM format is

VRM is an avatar format based on glTF 2.0, normally stored as a binary .vrm file. It adds avatar-specific data through extensions for humanoid bone mapping, facial expressions, look-at behavior, first-person settings, spring-bone physics, metadata, and license information.

VRoid Studio commonly creates VRM avatars after export. Unity projects using UniVRM can import and export VRM files, and Blender users can create or edit them with a compatible VRM add-on. You encounter VRM files in virtual YouTuber software, avatar applications, social VR platforms, and character pipelines built around humanoid models.

What the GLTF format is

glTF is a runtime-oriented 3D format designed for efficient delivery and loading of scenes, meshes, materials, textures, skeletons, morph targets, and animations. A .gltf file stores JSON scene data and may reference separate .bin and image files; a .glb file packages the same data into one binary file.

Use glTF when a web viewer, game engine, AR application, or modeling tool supports glTF but not VRM. Its standardized structure generally provides broader interoperability, although it does not automatically preserve VRM's avatar behavior and metadata.

How to convert VRM to GLTF

Using Blender

  1. Install a Blender version supported by the VRM Add-on for Blender, then enable the add-on in Edit → Preferences → Add-ons.
  2. Import the source file through File → Import → VRM (.vrm). Select the .vrm file and allow Blender to load its armature, meshes, materials, textures, and supported avatar data.
  3. Check the imported model in the viewport. Correct scale, pose, missing textures, material appearance, and unwanted objects before exporting.
  4. Choose File → Export → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf). Set Format to glTF Separate for a JSON .gltf plus external .bin and texture files, or choose glTF Embedded to place resources inside the JSON file.
  5. Enable the required export options, such as selected objects, skinning, shape keys, and animations, then click Export glTF 2.0. Keep the exported .gltf, .bin, and texture files together when using Separate format.

Using the online converter

On 101convert.com, select the VRM-to-GLTF conversion, upload the .vrm file, start the conversion, and download the resulting glTF file. This option avoids installing Blender, but it provides less control over materials, export settings, and repairs to the imported model.

Compatibility and limitations

Renaming .vrm to .gltf does not convert the file. A VRM is usually a GLB container with VRM extensions, so some glTF tools may open its geometry directly, but unsupported extensions can cause validation errors or ignored avatar behavior.

Standard glTF can preserve meshes, armatures, textures, skinning, morph targets, and compatible animations. VRM-specific features such as spring bones, humanoid definitions, expressions, look-at settings, first-person camera rules, license metadata, and MToon shader behavior may be discarded or require manual recreation. Test the exported file in the target application rather than assuming that the source avatar will behave identically.

With Separate format, moving only the .gltf file breaks references to the binary buffer and images. Use .glb when the destination accepts GLB and you need a single portable file.
