Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A GIF is a 2D raster image, while glTF is a 3D scene format, so this conversion is normally needed when GIF artwork must be placed on a model, plane, screen, or other 3D surface for use in a viewer or game engine. The result is not a new 3D model of the image; it is usually a flat plane carrying the GIF as a texture.

What the GIF format is

GIF stores indexed-color raster images with up to 256 colors per frame. It supports simple frame animation and one-bit transparency, making it common for web graphics, interface effects, sprites, screen recordings, and short looping animations.

Image editors such as Photoshop, GIMP, and Krita can create GIF files, as can screen-capture tools, animation software, and web browsers that save animated graphics. In 3D work, a GIF usually appears as reference artwork, a decal source, a sprite, or an animated texture that needs to be placed on geometry.

What the GLTF format is

glTF is a Khronos 3D interchange format that stores scenes, meshes, cameras, materials, textures, skinning data, and node animation. A .gltf file commonly references separate binary and image files; a .glb file packages the scene and resources into one binary file.

GLB is usually the more convenient export choice for game engines, WebGL viewers, AR applications, and asset libraries because it avoids broken external texture paths. glTF uses compact binary buffers and standard physically based materials, but it does not turn a flat raster image into modeled depth or surface geometry.

How to actually convert GIF to glTF

For a static GIF image

  1. Extract one frame and convert it to PNG. With FFmpeg, use ffmpeg -i input.gif -frames:v 1 output.png. PNG is preferable because it preserves more color information and transparency than GIF.
  2. Open Blender and create a flat surface with Add → Mesh → Plane. Delete the default cube if necessary; the plane already has suitable UV coordinates.
  3. Create a material in the Shading workspace. Add an Image Texture node, open output.png, and connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. Connect its Alpha output to the material alpha input if the GIF has transparent pixels.
  4. For transparent artwork, configure the material's blend or alpha mode as Alpha Hashed, Alpha Blend, or Alpha Clip, depending on the Blender version and the target viewer. Alpha Clip or the glTF MASK mode is suitable for hard-edged transparency; partial transparency requires BLEND.
  5. Export the selected plane through File → Export → glTF 2.0. Select GLB for a single portable file, or glTF with separate resources if your pipeline requires individual texture files. Enable selected-object export when the scene contains unrelated objects.

You can also use 101convert.com to convert the file online for free without installing software. Inspect the result in a glTF viewer because an automatic conversion must decide how to represent the 2D GIF as 3D geometry and how to handle its frames.

For an animated GIF

Extract the frames with ffmpeg -i input.gif frame_%04d.png. Blender can use the resulting files as an image sequence for preview or application-specific material animation, but standard glTF does not provide a portable animated-texture format for GIF frame playback.

Exporting the material with an image sequence generally produces only a static texture in glTF. A viewer that must reproduce the animation needs a custom extension, an external video or frame-sequence system, or a different asset format. If a portable glTF file is required, choose one representative frame or model the visual motion with supported node, skeletal, or morph-target animation.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • GIF's 256-color palette can produce banding and dithering. Extracting a frame and saving it as PNG prevents further palette loss but cannot restore colors discarded when the GIF was created.
  • GIF transparency is binary: each pixel is either transparent or opaque. Preserve it in PNG and verify the exported glTF alpha mode in the target engine.
  • A plane has no thickness or depth. Use Blender modeling tools to create actual geometry if the image must become a relief, label, or three-dimensional object rather than a surface texture.
  • Keep the image dimensions reasonable for the target device. Large textures increase GLB size and GPU memory use; resize the PNG before assigning it to the material when the display surface is small.
  • Test the exported .glb in the intended viewer or engine. Unsupported material settings, transparency modes, color management, and texture paths can produce different results across applications.
