Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A TIFF is a 2D raster image, while GLTF is a 3D scene format, so this conversion is usually needed to place a scanned drawing, photograph, or texture on geometry for a WebGL viewer, game engine, or 3D editor. The image must be mapped to a mesh; changing the filename or encoding alone does not create a meaningful 3D model.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) stores pixel data with support for lossless compression, high bit depth, color profiles, multiple channels, and sometimes multiple pages. Scanners, digital cameras, GIS applications, CAD software, desktop-publishing programs, and image editors commonly create TIFF files.

In 3D work, TIFF is normally used for source artwork, scanned plans, photographs, heightmaps, or material textures. A TIFF can contain transparency and 16-bit or 32-bit samples, but those features may need conversion before the image can be embedded in a glTF asset.

What the GLTF format is

glTF is a JSON-based 3D scene format designed to deliver meshes, materials, cameras, lights, node hierarchies, animations, and image textures to real-time viewers. Binary GLB is the single-file form of the same ecosystem; glTF commonly consists of a .gltf JSON file, a .bin buffer, and separate texture files.

glTF is suitable for WebGL applications, model viewers, game engines, AR, and 3D interchange because it describes GPU-ready geometry and material data without the conversion overhead associated with many authoring formats. It does not define a standard way to represent a standalone 2D TIFF as a 3D object.

How to actually convert TIFF to GLTF

Create a textured 3D plane in Blender

  1. Install Blender and open a new scene. Delete the default cube with X and confirm.
  2. Add a surface with Add → Mesh → Plane. Scale it to match the desired aspect ratio, or use the TIFF dimensions to calculate the plane proportions.
  3. Open the Shading workspace, select the plane, and create a material. Add an Image Texture node, choose Open, and select the TIFF. Connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF node's Base Color input, then connect the BSDF to Material Output.
  4. If Blender cannot read the TIFF or the file uses unsupported channel data, convert it first with ImageMagick: magick input.tif -alpha on output.png. Use -depth 8 when the target viewer requires an 8-bit texture.
  5. Adjust the plane's UV mapping in the UV Editing workspace. A default plane already has usable UVs; use UV → Unwrap after changing the mesh.
  6. Save the Blender project, select the textured object, and choose File → Export → glTF 2.0. Select glTF Binary (.glb) for one portable file, or glTF Separate (.gltf/.bin/.textures) when separate assets are required. Enable Selected Objects if the scene contains unrelated objects, then export.

Use the TIFF as a heightmap

For terrain or relief, convert the TIFF to a grayscale image, add a sufficiently subdivided plane, and use the image through a Displace modifier. Apply the modifier before File → Export → glTF 2.0. A single plane with a color texture remains flat; a heightmap produces geometry only when it is used to displace vertices.

Convert without installing software

The built-in converter on 101convert.com can be used free without installing software: upload the TIFF, select GLTF, run the conversion, and download the result. Because a TIFF contains no mesh, check the downloaded file in a glTF viewer to confirm that the service created geometry and assigned the image as a material texture; a direct image-to-container conversion may not produce a useful 3D scene.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • glTF core texture workflows generally use PNG or JPEG rather than TIFF. Convert TIFF textures to PNG for lossless transparency or to JPEG for smaller photographic textures without transparency.
  • Very large TIFFs can exceed GPU texture limits or create unnecessarily large GLB files. Resize to the target platform's limit, commonly 2048 or 4096 pixels per side, and inspect the result on the intended device.
  • TIFF color profiles, CMYK data, 16-bit precision, layered content, and multipage images may be flattened or converted during export. Convert to RGB or RGBA and verify color appearance in the target viewer.
  • GLTF export preserves the mapped texture and mesh, not TIFF editing features such as layers, pages, print resolution, or scanner metadata. A TIFF containing a technical drawing becomes a textured surface unless vector tracing or manual modeling creates actual 3D structure.
