Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A TIFF is a raster image, while a DAE file is a COLLADA 3D scene, so this conversion is usually needed when a modeling, visualization, or simulation program requires a DAE scene that uses the TIFF as a texture or heightmap. Converting the image alone does not create meaningful 3D geometry; the TIFF must be applied to a model, plane, or displacement workflow first.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF, or Tagged Image File Format, stores raster images with metadata, multiple channels, transparency, and lossless compression options. It is common in scanned material, texture libraries, GIS and elevation imagery, print production, CAD documentation, and rendered-image workflows.

Programs such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, ImageMagick, scanners, GIS applications, and some CAD or rendering tools create TIFF files. In 3D modeling, a TIFF usually represents a color texture, roughness or opacity map, or grayscale heightmap rather than a model.

What the DAE format is

DAE is the filename extension for COLLADA, an XML-based interchange format for 3D scenes. A DAE file can describe polygon meshes, transforms, cameras, lights, materials, animations, and references to external image textures.

COLLADA is useful when moving scenes between modeling, game, visualization, CAD, and simulation software that supports the format. It can preserve scene structure and material assignments better than a format intended only for static mesh geometry, but support for individual COLLADA features varies between applications.

How to actually convert TIFF to DAE

Use Blender for a controlled desktop conversion. The workflow depends on what the TIFF is supposed to represent.

  1. For a textured plane: open Blender, delete the default objects if necessary, and add a plane with Add → Mesh → Plane. Increase its subdivisions if the image needs to deform the surface.
  2. Open the Shading workspace, create an Image Texture node, choose the TIFF with Open, and connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. Blender normally assigns UV coordinates to a new plane.
  3. For a heightmap: use a grayscale TIFF, subdivide the plane heavily with Object → Subdivide or a Subdivision Surface modifier, then add a Displace modifier. Create a texture for the modifier, load the TIFF, and adjust Strength and Midlevel until the relief has the required scale.
  4. Apply modifiers with Object → Convert → Mesh or Object → Apply → Visual Geometry to Mesh, depending on the Blender version and whether the displaced shape must be exported as actual vertices.
  5. Check the model in Material Preview or Rendered view, apply the required transforms with Object → Apply → All Transforms, and remove cameras or lights that the destination application does not need.
  6. Export through File → Export → Collada (.dae). Enable Selection Only when only the prepared object should be included, and enable the exporter’s texture or material options when available. Save the result as scene.dae in a folder that also contains the referenced image.
  7. Open scene.dae in the target application and verify mesh scale, axis orientation, UV mapping, material assignment, and texture paths.

You can also convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. For this particular format pair, verify what the converter produces: an image-to-DAE operation may create a textured plane or a basic heightfield, but it cannot infer arbitrary 3D topology from ordinary TIFF pixels.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A standard TIFF contains no mesh, camera, object hierarchy, or 3D measurements. A direct extension change or image re-encoding cannot produce a valid, useful COLLADA model. Geometry must come from an existing model, a plane, or a heightmap interpretation of the pixels.

TIFF texture support is inconsistent among DAE readers. If the destination cannot load TIFF references, export the texture separately as PNG or JPEG, change the image reference in the DAE material, or pack the texture only if the receiving application supports packed COLLADA assets. Preserve PNG for transparency and lossless color; use JPEG only when smaller files are more important than compression artifacts.

Grayscale heightmaps require known real-world scale. Set the plane dimensions and displacement strength explicitly, because the TIFF does not inherently state whether one pixel represents a millimeter, meter, or another unit. Large TIFFs can also create excessive polygon counts after subdivision; reduce the image or use a controlled subdivision level before exporting.

COLLADA applications may disagree about left- versus right-handed coordinates, up-axis conventions, units, tangent data, animation, and material shaders. Test the exported scene in the final application rather than relying only on Blender’s viewport appearance.
