What the TIF format is

TIF, also called TIFF, is a raster image format used for high-resolution textures, scanned artwork, masks, heightmaps, and rendered images in 3D workflows. Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, image scanners, GIS software, and texture-painting applications can create TIF files. TIF supports lossless compression, high bit depths, alpha channels, and multiple pages, although many 3D programs support only a single image layer and limited channel types.

What the DAE format is

DAE is the file extension for COLLADA, an XML-based interchange format for scenes exported by Blender, SketchUp, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, and other 3D applications. A DAE file can describe meshes, UV coordinates, materials, lights, cameras, animations, and external image textures. It is useful when a modeling, game, visualization, or CAD application specifically requires COLLADA.

DAE does not represent a TIF image as geometry automatically. A valid image-to-DAE result normally contains a plane or other mesh with the TIF assigned as a material texture.

How to actually convert TIF to DAE

Blender is the practical desktop option because it can load raster textures, assign them to UV-mapped meshes, and export COLLADA scenes.

1. Open Blender and create a plane with Shift + A → Mesh → Plane. A plane is sufficient when the TIF is a flat graphic or texture.
2. Open the Shading workspace, create a material, add an Image Texture node, choose file.tif, and connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input.
3. Confirm that the plane has UV coordinates. Blender's default plane already has a basic UV map; use UV Editing → Unwrap if the mesh is different.
4. For a heightmap, subdivide the mesh, load the TIF in a Displace modifier, and adjust strength and midlevel. A color texture alone produces no surface relief.
5. Save the scene, then choose File → Export → Collada (.dae). Enable the options for UV textures and material textures, export only the selected mesh if required, and use relative texture paths when the destination application expects separate image files.
6. Keep the exported .dae and texture file in the same relative folder structure. Open the DAE in the target program and check both the material and UV placement.

You can also convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software, but an automatic image-to-DAE result may contain only a basic plane and may not preserve the material setup required by a particular 3D application.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion does not create a model from the visual content of the TIF. It preserves image pixels as a texture; meaningful 3D shape requires an existing mesh or a separate heightmap-to-mesh workflow.

Many COLLADA readers handle PNG and JPEG more consistently than TIF. If the target application shows a missing texture, flatten the TIF, convert it to texture.png, reconnect that image in Blender, and export again. Preserve alpha only when the receiving renderer supports transparent materials.

Layered, multipage, CMYK, 16-bit, and 32-bit TIF features may be flattened, converted, or ignored. Convert color textures to RGB or RGBA, use non-color data settings for roughness, normal, or displacement maps, and verify paths after moving the DAE because COLLADA commonly stores textures as external references rather than embedding them.
