Free online IGS to DAE converter

A CAD part may need conversion when a visualization tool, 3D viewer, or scene editor accepts COLLADA .dae files but cannot read IGES. The process tessellates precise engineering geometry into a polygon mesh for display and rendering.

IGS and IGES files

IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) is a legacy neutral CAD exchange standard. Files commonly use .igs or .iges and can contain curves, NURBS surfaces, boundary-representation solids, layers, colors, and other CAD entities.

Manufacturers, suppliers, machine shops, and older CAD systems still distribute IGES models when a native CAD format cannot be exchanged. The format is supported for import by many CAD products, including FreeCAD, Rhino, SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Creo, and Autodesk Inventor; import quality depends on the entities used in the source file.

IGES retains geometric definitions rather than a ready-made render mesh. It is therefore suitable for CAD exchange, but not directly suitable for many real-time or scene-oriented 3D applications.

DAE and COLLADA files

DAE is the extension for COLLADA, an XML-based 3D scene format. A DAE file can store mesh geometry, object hierarchy, transforms, materials, UV coordinates, lights, cameras, skinning, and animation.

COLLADA is used by Blender, SketchUp, older visualization pipelines, and applications with a COLLADA importer. Its scene structure and broad mesh support are useful for transferring a CAD model into a graphics workflow. XML-based DAE files can be relatively large, and texture images may be referenced as separate files rather than embedded.

A typical CAD-to-DAE conversion creates triangles or polygons from the IGES surfaces. The resulting DAE is not an editable CAD-solid replacement for the original IGS file.

Convert the file

Upload the .igs file to 101convert.com, select DAE as the output format, run the conversion, and download the generated file. Open the result in the intended application and inspect it before using it in a production scene.

When mesh density needs manual control, use a desktop CAD workflow such as FreeCAD:

1. Open the model with File → Open.
2. Check imported bodies and surfaces in the Model tree. Repair failed or missing surfaces before meshing.
3. Switch to the Mesh Design workbench.
4. Select the imported shape and choose Meshes → Create mesh from shape.
5. Set a linear deflection appropriate to the part size. Lower values create a denser, smoother mesh; higher values reduce polygon count and file size.
6. Select the generated mesh, then use File → Export and choose Collada (*.dae) if that exporter is available in the installed FreeCAD version.

Keep separate source components as separate objects when the target scene needs individual parts. Check object names, transforms, and hierarchy after export.

Mesh, scale, and material checks

Tessellation controls the main quality trade-off. Coarse meshes visibly facet cylinders, fillets, and freeform surfaces; extremely fine meshes can create millions of triangles, large DAE files, and slow imports. Use the lowest mesh density that preserves the visible shape at the intended viewing distance.

IGES may specify inches, millimeters, or other source units, while COLLADA commonly represents scene units in meters. Some importers ignore or reinterpret COLLADA unit metadata. Measure a known feature after import and correct scale before placing the model in a larger scene.

CAD features, exact surface definitions, construction history, tolerances, dimensions, manufacturing annotations, and assembly constraints do not transfer as usable DAE data. Source colors may transfer, but CAD materials rarely map cleanly to graphics materials, and IGES files normally do not contain render-ready textures. Verify normals, orientation, separate parts, colors, and material assignments in the target application.
