At best difficult, it's usually impossible to convert .max files (3ds Max Scene Files) without utilizing the correct software version. This format is exclusively proprietary and closed. A backward compatibility is also not possible.
In any case, you will need to have 3ds Max installed on your device, even if you come across another program/converter capable of converting .max to .dae files.
Simply import your .max file in 3ds Max. Select to export the model to a different format, e.g. .3ds. These files can then be converted to other format, such as the .dae format. For that you can use programs like Blender (see list below), or similar.
