SKP is the native file format used by SketchUp, a 3D modeling application from Trimble. It stores geometry, materials, components, scenes, and sometimes textures for architectural models, product designs, interiors, landscapes, and other 3D scenes.

DAE is a Collada interchange format used to move 3D assets between applications. It can preserve meshes, materials, scene structure, and sometimes animations, depending on the software involved.

How to convert skp to dae

The most reliable desktop method is to use SketchUp, because it can export directly to Collada.

1. Open the .skp file in SketchUp.
2. Choose File → Export → 3D Model.
3. In the export format list, select COLLADA File (*.dae).
4. Choose a filename and location, then click Export.
5. If prompted, review export options such as units, texture handling, and whether to export only the current selection.

Note: SketchUp exports Collada through the desktop app. The web-based version has more limited export options, so if you need a dependable .dae file, use SketchUp Pro or another desktop version that includes Collada export.

Alternative tools

If you do not have SketchUp, Blender can be useful in a conversion workflow, but current Blender versions do not natively import .skp files. In practice, you usually need an intermediate step, such as exporting from SketchUp to .dae, .fbx, or .obj, then opening that file in Blender.

For online conversion, reputable services such as Convertio or AnyConv may support skp to dae conversion. Upload the .skp file, choose .dae as the output format, and download the result. Use online converters only for non-sensitive models, since your file is uploaded to a third-party server.

Compatibility and limitations

SKP to DAE conversion usually works well for geometry and basic materials, but results depend on the SketchUp version, model complexity, and the target application’s Collada support. Common limitations include:

• Textures may not transfer perfectly, especially if image files are missing or stored in unusual locations.
• SketchUp-specific features such as dynamic components, styles, shadows, and some scene settings do not convert cleanly.
• Units and scale can change if export settings are not matched carefully.
• Animations are only preserved when both the source and destination software support them well.
• Collada support is inconsistent in modern software, so some apps import .dae files only partially.

For best results, clean up the model before exporting, purge unused content, verify textures, and test the .dae file in the destination application. If Collada is not a good fit for your workflow, consider exporting to FBX or OBJ instead, if your target software supports those formats.
