Convert SKP to ZIP

A ZIP archive is needed when a sharing portal, backup system, or recipient requires compressed packaging instead of a standalone SketchUp file. Creating it stores the original .skp file inside a .zip; it does not convert the 3D model into another format.

What the SKP format is

.skp is SketchUp's native project format for 3D models, scenes, materials, components, and model metadata. Architects, interior designers, engineers, contractors, and 3D artists commonly use it. SketchUp creates and opens SKP files, while SketchUp Viewer and some third-party CAD or BIM applications can open compatible versions; support varies by application and file version.

An SKP can contain model materials and their textures, but separately stored linked components, textures, images, references, or other project files may remain outside it. Check the model's dependencies before sending it.

What the ZIP format is

.zip is a general-purpose archive format that stores one or more files in a single container and normally uses lossless compression. It packages an SKP with textures, component files, PDFs, images, or documentation for upload, transfer, and backup. Extracting the archive restores the stored files without changing their contents.

How to create the ZIP archive

SketchUp is not required; use the operating system's archive function or a desktop utility such as 7-Zip.

• Windows: In File Explorer, right-click the SKP file and choose Compress to ZIP file or Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder. Rename the resulting archive if necessary.
• macOS: In Finder, select the SKP file, Control-click it, and choose Compress. macOS creates a ZIP in the same folder.
• 7-Zip: Right-click the file, choose 7-Zip → Add to archive…, set the archive format to zip, select a compression level, and click OK.
• Command line: With 7-Zip installed, run 7z a model.zip model.skp. On macOS or Linux, run zip model.zip model.skp.

To include related assets, place the SKP and all required separately stored files in one project folder, then compress that folder rather than only the SKP. Keeping the original folder structure helps preserve relative file references after extraction.

A browser-based archiver such as ezyZip can create ZIP files without installing software and is suitable for smaller, non-sensitive files. Desktop tools are preferable for large models or proprietary designs because uploading them to a web service may expose them to processing, logging, or retention covered by that service's terms.

Quality and compatibility limits

ZIP creation leaves the SKP's geometry, materials, metadata, and SketchUp version unchanged. It does not make an SKP compatible with an older SketchUp release or repair a damaged model. SKP files may already contain compressed binary data, so the ZIP may be only slightly smaller than the original.

Do not rename model.skp to model.zip; changing the extension does not create a valid archive. The recipient must extract the ZIP before opening the SKP and may need a compatible SketchUp version or viewer. Include separately stored textures, linked files, and a version note when the model depends on them.
