Convert OBB to ZIP

A ZIP copy is useful when a cloud service, email system, or desktop archive tool rejects an Android .obb extension. The correct method depends on whether the OBB is already a ZIP archive, a different container, or encrypted app data.

What an OBB file is

OBB means Opaque Binary Blob. Android expansion files used this extension for large assets outside an APK, including textures, maps, audio, video, and game data. Legacy Google Play expansion files commonly use names such as main.123.com.example.game.obb and patch.123.com.example.game.obb.

An OBB extension does not define one universal internal format. An app developer can use a ZIP-compatible archive, an Android OBB image created with the jobb tool, encrypted data, or a proprietary asset container. Google Play expansion files are a legacy delivery mechanism; current Android distribution generally uses Android App Bundles and Play Asset Delivery.

On devices, an expansion file is conventionally stored under /Android/obb/<package-name>/. Apps that use it may require the exact package folder, version code, and filename.

What ZIP provides

ZIP is a widely supported archive format that bundles files and folders while preserving their directory structure. Windows, macOS, Linux, 7-Zip, PeaZip, and most cloud-storage services can open or create ZIP files.

Changing an OBB that is already a ZIP archive to a .zip filename does not recompress or alter its data. Creating a ZIP that contains an OBB produces a portable wrapper, but it does not convert or expose the OBB's internal assets. Recompression often saves little space because game textures, audio, and video are commonly already compressed.

Test whether the OBB is already a ZIP archive

1. Make a copy of the OBB file; retain the original filename for Android use.
2. Test the copy with 7-Zip on Windows, PeaZip on Windows/Linux, or the command below on macOS or Linux.

unzip -t main.123.com.example.game.obb

In 7-Zip, right-click the file and select 7-Zip → Test archive. If the test completes without errors and the archive contents are listed, the file is ZIP-compatible.

Rename only the copied file's final extension:

main.123.com.example.game.obb
main.123.com.example.game.zip

On Windows, enable visible extensions through View → Show → File name extensions before renaming. Do not change the original OBB's version number, package name, or extension if it must be restored to an Android device.

On macOS or Linux, copy the file under a ZIP name without modifying the source:

cp main.123.com.example.game.obb main.123.com.example.game.zip

Create a ZIP wrapper for a non-ZIP OBB

If the archive test fails, do not rename the file and expect it to become a valid ZIP. Create a new ZIP containing the unchanged OBB instead:

1. Select the OBB in 7-Zip or PeaZip.
2. Choose Add to archive.
3. Select ZIP as the archive format.
4. Create a name such as game-obb-backup.zip.

Extracting game-obb-backup.zip later restores the original OBB unchanged. This is the appropriate option for transfer, storage, or services that accept ZIP files but reject unknown extensions.

For small, non-sensitive files, browser-based tools such as CloudConvert or ezyZip can create a ZIP wrapper. Do not use an online service to upload copyrighted game assets, private app data, or multi-gigabyte OBB files; desktop archivers avoid transfer limits and third-party storage.

Encrypted and proprietary OBB files

An OBB made with Android's jobb tooling or an app-specific system may be encrypted or use a non-ZIP filesystem or container. Android Studio does not generically decrypt or convert such files. Accessing its contents requires the format-specific tool and, where encryption is used, the correct key or credentials supplied by the developer.

If you legitimately extract files from an OBB, you can archive the extracted folder as a ZIP with 7-Zip, PeaZip, Finder, or zip -r assets.zip extracted-folder/. That ZIP is an archive of the extracted content, not a replacement expansion file.

Compatibility limits

A ZIP file is not an installable Android expansion file. To restore a renamed ZIP-compatible OBB, change its extension back to .obb and place it in the exact folder and filename expected by the app. A wrapper ZIP must first be extracted to recover the OBB.

Avoid extracting and rebuilding files intended for a game unless the developer documents that workflow. Rebuilding can change compression, file order, metadata, encryption, checksums, or signatures that the app expects.
