MSWallet is a legacy Microsoft wallet file format used by older versions of Microsoft Wallet and related Windows mobile software. It was commonly used to store digital wallet data such as passes, cards, coupons, and other small packaged items for mobile devices and older Microsoft ecosystems. Because it is an older, specialized format, support is limited in modern software.

Target format

ZIP is a widely supported archive format used to bundle one or more files into a single container. Its main advantages are broad compatibility, easy extraction on most operating systems, and the ability to inspect or preserve the contents of a package. Converting an MSWallet file to ZIP is useful when you want to open, inspect, or extract the underlying files with standard archive tools.

How to perform the conversion

In many cases, an MSWallet file is already a packaged container, so the conversion may be as simple as renaming the file extension if the contents are ZIP-compatible. If that does not work, use a desktop archive tool to test and repack the contents.

1. Make a copy of the original .mswallet file so you keep the source unchanged.
2. Try opening it as an archive with a tool such as 7-Zip, WinRAR, or PeaZip. If the program recognizes the file, you can extract the contents.
3. If the file opens successfully, repack the extracted files into ZIP. In 7-Zip, for example, select the extracted files, then use Add to archive... and choose ZIP as the archive format.
4. If the file is not recognized, try renaming filename.mswallet to filename.zip and open it again. This works only if the file structure is actually ZIP-based.

Notes on quality, compatibility, or limitations

Not every MSWallet file can be converted cleanly to ZIP. Some files may contain metadata, signatures, or proprietary structures that archive tools do not preserve. If the file is not actually ZIP-based, renaming it will not make it readable. In that case, extraction may require the original Microsoft software or a specialized parser.

When the conversion does work, the resulting ZIP usually preserves the original file contents without quality loss, since this is a container-to-container conversion rather than a media re-encoding. However, the archive may not preserve wallet-specific behavior or app integration, only the files inside it.
