Convert CRDOWNLOAD to ZIP

A program, website, or device may require a completed .zip archive for sharing, uploading, or storage, but Chrome may leave the download as .crdownload after an interruption. A partial download is not normally converted; it must be resumed, downloaded again, or—only if complete—renamed and tested as a ZIP archive.

What a CRDOWNLOAD file is

.crdownload is a temporary filename suffix used by Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers while a download is in progress. The file contains the bytes received so far, and its name typically follows a pattern such as archive.zip.crdownload.

Chrome normally removes the suffix and restores the original filename when the download finishes. A stopped, failed, paused, or interrupted download can remain as a .crdownload file. Firefox generally uses .part instead.

The suffix does not identify the file's real format and does not provide a conversion method. Renaming incomplete data to .zip cannot recreate missing bytes. ZIP archives are especially likely to fail because their directory information is normally stored near the end of the archive.

What a ZIP file provides

.zip is an archive format that stores one or more files and folders in a single container, optionally compressing their contents. It is supported by Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, file managers, and many upload systems.

A ZIP archive can simplify sharing and preserve a folder structure, but compression depends on the source data. JPEG images, video, already-compressed ZIP files, and many installation packages may become little smaller or slightly larger when zipped.

Check whether the download is complete

1. Open Chrome's downloads page with Ctrl+J on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+J on macOS, and select Resume or retry the download.
2. If Chrome cannot resume it, start the download again from the original source. Resumption also depends on the server supporting range requests and retaining the same download.
3. After completion, verify the filename and extension. Enable file extensions in the operating system if the extension is hidden; do not infer the format from the icon alone.

If a download known to be a ZIP is complete but still ends in .crdownload, make a copy and rename archive.zip.crdownload to archive.zip. On Windows, use File Explorer → View → Show → File name extensions; on macOS or Linux, rename the file in Finder or the file manager. Test the result with the system archive utility or 7-Zip. A successful test confirms that the received bytes form a usable archive; the rename itself performs no conversion.

Create a ZIP from a completed file

If the completed download is a document, image, folder, or another non-ZIP file, create a new archive rather than changing its extension:

• Windows: select the file or folder, right-click it, and choose Compress to ZIP file or Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder, depending on the Windows version.
• macOS: Control-click the selected file or folder and choose Compress.
• Linux: use the file manager's Compress command, or run zip -r archive.zip folder in a terminal.
• Windows, macOS, or Linux: install 7-Zip, 7zz, or another established archiver, choose Add to archive, set the format to ZIP, and select the compression level and destination.

Do not put an existing ZIP inside another ZIP unless a receiving system specifically requires that structure. Recompressing a ZIP usually provides no size benefit.

Online options

Online services generally cannot repair or meaningfully convert a partial .crdownload file. Complete the download first, then use a browser-based ZIP creator such as ezyZip for packaging files, or use CloudConvert or Zamzar when you need to convert a supported completed source format and the service explicitly lists the required output.

Upload only the completed file, not the .crdownload placeholder. Check the service's accepted formats, maximum file size, retention policy, and privacy terms; desktop archivers are preferable for confidential files or large folders.

Compatibility and integrity checks

Open the resulting archive with at least one standard archive utility and check several extracted files. A partial archive may show a damaged central directory, missing entries, or extraction errors; 7-Zip's Test command can detect many such problems.

ZIP encryption is not uniform across programs. Standard ZipCrypto is weak, while AES-encrypted ZIP archives may require a compatible extractor; ask the recipient which encryption, if any, is supported. Renaming a partial download, changing its compression setting, or wrapping it in another ZIP does not repair corruption.
