A .crdownload file usually indicates an incomplete browser download that was intended to become an Excel workbook. Software that requires the older .xls format cannot open it until the download finishes or the complete source file is recovered.

What the CRDOWNLOAD format is

.crdownload is a temporary filename extension used by Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers while downloading a file. The browser appends it to the original name, such as sales.xls.crdownload, and removes it after the download completes.

It is not a spreadsheet format and does not contain a defined data structure for conversion. The file may contain only part of an XLS workbook, or it may be a partial PDF, archive, image, or another file type whose original extension is hidden until completion.

What the XLS format is

.xls is Microsoft Excel's binary workbook format used primarily by Excel 97–2003 and compatible spreadsheet programs. It stores worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, and limited macro content in a single workbook.

XLS remains useful when an older accounting system, spreadsheet application, import routine, or document-management system does not accept newer .xlsx files. It has a smaller feature set and a lower worksheet capacity than modern Excel formats: 65,536 rows and 256 columns per sheet.

How to actually convert CRDOWNLOAD to XLS

1. Open the browser's Downloads page with Ctrl+J and check whether the download is paused or failed. Resume it or download the file again from the original source.
2. Wait until the browser removes .crdownload automatically. If the completed filename is report.xls, no conversion is required; the file is already in XLS format.
3. If the download is complete but the temporary extension remains, close the browser and verify that the file size is stable. Rename report.xls.crdownload to report.xls only when the original download was explicitly an XLS file. In a terminal, the equivalent command is mv "report.xls.crdownload" "report.xls".
4. Open the resulting file in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc. If it opens, use File → Save As, select Excel 97–2003 (*.xls), and save a new copy.
5. If the completed download is another spreadsheet type, such as .xlsx or .csv, open that actual file in Excel or LibreOffice Calc and use File → Save As → Excel 97–2003 (*.xls). Renaming a non-XLS file does not convert its contents.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A completed file named .xls.crdownload needs only a filename change; converting it through another program can introduce unnecessary formatting or formula changes. If the download was interrupted, renaming it may produce a corrupt workbook rather than a usable XLS file.

Saving .xlsx or another newer spreadsheet as XLS can remove unsupported features, including some tables, conditional-formatting rules, dynamic-array formulas, cell comments, and newer chart or pivot-table options. Check formulas, dates, merged cells, charts, and macros after saving; macro content may require an appropriate macro-enabled workflow and security settings.
