A .partial file usually appears when a browser or download manager has not finished downloading a file. To obtain a usable .zip archive, resume the original download first; changing the extension alone does not complete or convert the data.

What the PARTIAL format is

.partial is generally a temporary Internet-download filename rather than a standardized archive format. Browsers and download managers use it while receiving a file, preserving incomplete data so the transfer can resume after an interruption. Firefox commonly uses .part, while other browsers, download managers, and websites may use .partial or another temporary suffix.

The file may contain the beginning of a ZIP archive, video, installer, document, or another downloaded format. Its extension does not identify the final file type, and an unfinished download normally lacks required end-of-file data such as a ZIP central directory.

What the ZIP format is

ZIP is an archive format that stores one or more files in a single container and usually compresses them. It is supported by Windows, macOS, Linux, browsers, file managers, and archive utilities such as 7-Zip and The Unarchiver.

ZIP is useful for distributing multiple files, preserving a folder structure, reducing transfer size when the contents compress well, and packaging a completed download. A valid ZIP archive must contain the archive metadata needed for extraction; an incomplete transfer may not contain that metadata.

How to actually convert PARTIAL to ZIP

  1. Open the browser or download manager that created the file and check its downloads list. Select Resume or restart the download from the original URL. Do not move or rename the temporary file while the application is still downloading it.
  2. After the transfer reaches 100%, verify the resulting filename and extension. If the downloaded content was supposed to be a ZIP archive, rename it to a name ending in .zip only after the download has completed.
  3. Test the archive with 7-Zip using 7-Zip → Test archive, or open it in the operating system's archive manager. A successful listing and extraction confirm that the download is complete.
  4. If the completed download is a non-ZIP file that you want to package, install 7-Zip, right-click the file, choose 7-Zip → Add to archive…, select zip as the archive format, and choose OK. On Linux, the equivalent command is zip package.zip filename.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software, but it cannot reconstruct bytes missing from an interrupted download. Complete or recover the download first; use an online conversion step only when the resulting file is a supported source format that actually needs conversion.

Compatibility and limitations

Renaming file.partial to file.zip changes only the filename. It works only when the partial suffix was left on an otherwise complete ZIP download. If 7-Zip reports a missing end-of-archive record, unexpected end of data, or CRC errors, resume the transfer or download the file again.

Some download managers can resume only when the server supports HTTP range requests and the original URL, authorization, and download settings remain valid. Archive repair tools may recover individual entries from a partially transferred ZIP, but they cannot restore missing compressed data and may produce incomplete files.
