A video download may end with .partial when a browser or download manager has not finished writing it, while an editing application or older playback device may require AVI. The conversion is possible only after the download is complete or the partial file contains a valid, recoverable media stream.

What the PARTIAL format is

.partial is usually a temporary Internet-download suffix, not a standardized video container or codec. Browsers and download managers use it while receiving a file, then replace it with the original extension after verification; Firefox commonly uses .part, and Chromium-based browsers commonly use .crdownload.

A PARTIAL file can therefore contain MP4, WebM, MKV, or another format, but its filename does not identify the actual media type. An interrupted download is normally incomplete, so conversion software may reject it, produce a truncated AVI, or lose the final audio and video indexes.

What the AVI format is

AVI is a Microsoft Audio Video Interleave container supported by many older Windows applications, editing tools, and playback devices. It can store different video and audio codecs, including MPEG-4 video, Motion JPEG, uncompressed video, PCM audio, and MP3 audio.

AVI is useful when a legacy program specifically requests it or when a device has better AVI support than modern containers. It generally produces larger files than MP4 using H.264 or H.265, and changing the container alone does not make an incompatible codec playable.

How to convert PARTIAL to AVI

  1. Let the browser or download manager finish the download. Resume it from the original download page if necessary; do not convert an actively growing file.
  2. Check the completed file's real type. Use the extension shown after completion, or inspect it with ffprobe "downloaded-file". If you know the original extension but the download still has a temporary suffix, rename a copy to that extension, such as video.partial to video.mp4, only after the download has finished.
  3. Test playback before conversion. If the file cannot play from beginning to end, obtain a complete copy; AVI conversion cannot reconstruct missing download data.
  4. For a free browser-based conversion, use the converter on 101convert.com, upload the completed video rather than the unfinished .partial file, select AVI, and download the result. No software installation is required.
  5. For local conversion, FFmpeg can transcode a valid completed source:
ffmpeg -i "video.mp4" -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 4 -c:a pcm_s16le "video.avi"

The command uses MPEG-4 Part 2 video and uncompressed PCM audio, a broadly readable combination, but PCM substantially increases the output size. If the target device requires MP3 audio and supports it, use -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k instead of -c:a pcm_s16le.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Transcoding from a completed compressed video to AVI usually re-encodes the video and can reduce quality. A stream-copy command such as ffmpeg -i "video.mkv" -c copy "video.avi" avoids re-encoding, but it works only when the source codecs and AVI container are compatible; many modern H.264, H.265, or VP9 streams are unsuitable for the intended AVI player.

AVI has weak support for modern metadata, subtitles, variable-frame-rate behavior, and some streaming features. Older software may also impose a 2 GB limit even though OpenDML AVI supports larger files. If the PARTIAL file is missing its ending, conversion may stop early or create an AVI with no usable index, so a complete source is the essential requirement.
