Convert PAK to ZIP

Check the file type first

.pak is not one universal archive format. Some PAK files are simple containers, but many are not ZIP files and cannot be converted just by renaming them to .zip.

If the file was only given a .pak extension by mistake and is actually a ZIP archive, you can usually rename it back to .zip and open it with a ZIP-compatible program.

Try opening it with archive software

Test the file with a general archiver such as 7-Zip, WinRAR, or PeaZip. If the program can read the contents, extract the files first and then create a new ZIP archive from them.

Important: renaming a true PAK file to .zip does not convert it. It only changes the filename extension.

Use a dedicated extractor

For game-specific PAK formats, use an extractor made for that game or engine. Dragon UnPACKer can work for some PAK variants, but support is limited and format-specific.

Other games may require a different unpacking tool, so the correct utility depends on the source of the archive.

Repack the extracted files as ZIP

If you can extract the contents, you can make a new ZIP archive from the extracted files:

1. Extract the files from the .pak archive.
2. Select the extracted files and folders.
3. Choose Add to archive or Compress.
4. Select ZIP as the archive format.
5. Save the new file with a .zip extension.

Know the limitations

PAK files may use different structures, compression methods, or encryption. Some are proprietary and cannot be converted to ZIP in a meaningful way. In those cases, you may be able to extract the data, but you cannot preserve the original PAK format by simply changing the extension.

If the file is a renamed ZIP archive, changing the extension back to .zip is enough. If it is a true PAK archive, you must extract the contents first and then create a new ZIP file.
