Convert XAPK to ZIP

A file manager, archive utility, or sharing service may require an XAPK to use the more widely recognized .zip extension. Renaming or repacking the archive lets you inspect, share, or archive its APK, OBB, and manifest files without changing the Android application itself.

What the XAPK format is

XAPK is a distribution archive used by Android app stores and third-party distributors such as APKPure. It is not a single official Android package standard; most XAPK files are ZIP-compatible archives containing a base APK, split APK files, OBB expansion data, and metadata such as manifest.json.

Android's standard package installer does not reliably install every XAPK because the archive may contain multiple APKs and separate game data. An XAPK-aware installer, or a manual installation process using tools such as adb install-multiple, may be required.

What the ZIP format is

ZIP is a general-purpose archive format supported by Windows File Explorer, macOS Archive Utility, Linux archive managers, 7-Zip, PeaZip, Keka, and most file-sharing services. It can contain the same files as an XAPK while using a filename extension recognized by more programs.

ZIP does not make an XAPK installable as a normal APK, and it does not necessarily produce a smaller file. The conversion normally changes only the outer filename extension; the APK files and their contents remain unchanged.

How to convert an XAPK to ZIP

Rename the extension

1. Make a backup copy of the original XAPK.
2. Display filename extensions. In Windows Explorer, select View → Show → File name extensions.
3. Rename app.xapk to app.zip, then confirm that you want to change the extension.
4. Open the new ZIP with Windows File Explorer, macOS Archive Utility, 7-Zip, PeaZip, Keka, or another ZIP-compatible archive utility.

This is a lossless container-level change. It does not decompress or recompress the archive, so it avoids unnecessary processing and preserves the original files, directory structure, and archive data.

Use a desktop archive utility

7-Zip is a free Windows utility that can inspect and extract large archives. Install it from 7-zip.org, right-click the file, and select 7-Zip → Open archive. You can extract the contents without renaming, or select 7-Zip → Extract to "app\\". PeaZip provides a similar cross-platform interface, while Keka is a suitable macOS alternative.

To create a new ZIP after extracting the contents, keep every file and the original folder structure, select the containing folder, and choose the archive utility's ZIP creation command. With 7-Zip, a Windows command is:

7z a app.zip .\\app\\*

Repacking is unnecessary when renaming works. It can also change compression settings, timestamps, or archive metadata even though it does not normally change the files inside.

Use the command line

PowerShell can rename the file without modifying its contents:

Rename-Item -LiteralPath "app.xapk" -NewName "app.zip"

On macOS or Linux, use:

mv app.xapk app.zip

Afterward, inspect or extract it with a ZIP utility. On macOS or Linux, for example:

unzip app.zip -d app

Use an online converter

An online service such as Convertio can be used when installing desktop software is not possible; select the XAPK file, choose ZIP as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. Verify that the service currently lists .xapk as an accepted input because support and file-size limits can change.

Online conversion is unnecessary for a normal XAPK because renaming is sufficient. Uploading sends the archive, which may contain proprietary software, paid applications, private data, or untrusted code, to a third party. Use a local utility such as 7-Zip, PeaZip, or Keka for confidential files, and delete uploaded and downloaded copies when processing sensitive data.

Compatibility and quality limits

A renamed ZIP remains an archive, not a standard APK. Tapping it on an Android device will not install it in every file manager. To install the application, use an XAPK-compatible installer or follow the package's required split-APK and OBB procedure; do not assume that copying OBB data manually is valid for every application.

If renaming produces an archive error, the file may be incomplete, corrupt, or an XAPK variant that is not ZIP-compatible. Download it again or open it with 7-Zip before attempting to repackage it. When creating a new ZIP, retain the manifest, all APK parts, OBB files, and directory paths; omitting one component can prevent an installer or application from recognizing the package.
