We can't read JPA files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into ZIP:

How to convert jpa to zip file

A recipient, operating system, or upload service may accept ordinary ZIP archives but not Joomla/Akeeba JPA backups. Converting is useful for inspection or transfer, but the original JPA should be retained if the backup may later restore a Joomla site.

What the JPA format is

JPA is the archive format used by JoomlaPack and Akeeba Backup for Joomla site backups. A backup commonly contains the site files and a database dump, which may include configuration data, credentials, and user information.

Large backups can be split into a main file and volume parts, such as site-backup.jpa, site-backup.j01, and site-backup.j02. All parts are required for complete extraction and must remain together with their original names.

JPA is not simply a ZIP archive with a different extension. Windows Explorer and many general-purpose archive utilities cannot reliably read it; use Akeeba's extraction tools.

What the ZIP format is

ZIP is a widely supported archive container that can store one or more files with optional compression. Windows, macOS, Linux, 7-Zip, and most file-sharing and upload services can open ZIP without Joomla-specific software.

ZIP is suitable when a recipient needs access to the extracted files or a service rejects JPA. Repacking usually does not reduce the size significantly because JPA contents are already compressed, and it can produce a larger archive.

How to convert JPA to ZIP

Renaming .jpa to .zip is not a conversion. The reliable process is to extract the JPA archive, then create a new ZIP from the extracted files.

  1. Put the main .jpa file and every matching volume, including .j01, .j02, and later parts, in one directory. Do not rename, reorder, or omit a part.
  2. Install Akeeba Extract Wizard from the official Akeeba website. Open it, select the main JPA file, choose an empty destination directory, and start extraction. The wizard reads the associated volume files automatically when they are present.
  3. If the archive is being deployed directly to a PHP-enabled web server, use Akeeba Kickstart instead. Upload kickstart.php and the complete, unchanged archive set to the server, open the script in a browser, select the extraction options, and remove the script and backup files after completion.
  4. Check the extracted directory for the expected Joomla files and database dump. Do not distribute the dump or configuration files unless their sensitive contents are intended for the recipient.
  5. Install 7-Zip, select the extracted directory, and choose 7-Zip → Add to archive. Set Archive format to zip, select an appropriate compression level, and create the archive.

7-Zip can also create the archive from a command prompt:

7z a -tzip site-backup.zip site-backup

Replace site-backup with the extracted directory name. macOS Archive Utility, Linux File Roller, and the built-in ZIP commands can also create ZIP files, but 7-Zip provides consistent options and ZIP64 support for large archives.

Compatibility and limitations

The resulting ZIP contains extracted files, not an Akeeba JPA container. Akeeba restoration workflows generally expect the original JPA or another Akeeba-supported backup format, so keep the complete original archive set for restoration.

Extraction and repacking can alter Unix permissions, ownership, symbolic links, and some timestamps, depending on the operating system and tool. Test the ZIP before sending it by opening it and checking representative files; do not treat it as a replacement for a tested Joomla backup.

Choose ZIP64 when the archive or an individual file may exceed traditional ZIP limits. Current 7-Zip and operating systems support ZIP64, but older archive programs may not.

Online converters are generally unsuitable for JPA. Many do not support the format, large multi-part backups exceed upload limits, and uploading a Joomla backup can expose database credentials and private site data. Use Akeeba Extract Wizard and 7-Zip locally; use an online service only after removing sensitive data and confirming that it explicitly supports the required archive operation.

The database currently does not contain any direct jpa file converter links.
