Convert ENC to ZIP

A receiving program or upload service may accept ZIP archives but reject files with the .enc extension. Packaging the ENC file inside a ZIP satisfies that requirement without decrypting or changing the original data.

What the ENC format is

.enc is not a single standardized format. The extension commonly identifies encrypted or encoded data produced by OpenSSL, AxCrypt, backup software, document tools, and proprietary applications; specialized systems may use it for their own charts, configuration files, or other data.

The creating application, encryption method, password, and internal file structure determine how an ENC file can be opened. Renaming file.enc to file.zip does not convert it and normally produces an invalid ZIP archive. Only rename it if the program that created it explicitly documents that the extension is interchangeable.

What ZIP provides

ZIP is a general-purpose archive format supported by Windows File Explorer, macOS Archive Utility, Linux archive tools, and applications such as 7-Zip. It can bundle one or more files while preserving names and folder structure, and it can optionally apply separate ZIP-level encryption.

A ZIP archive containing file.enc still contains the same encrypted or encoded file. It does not decrypt the data, repair corruption, make proprietary content readable by another application, or turn it into an editable document. Encrypted data usually compresses poorly, so the ZIP may be nearly the same size as the ENC file.

Package an ENC file as ZIP

Windows with 7-Zip:

1. Install 7-Zip from 7-zip.org.
2. Right-click file.enc and choose 7-Zip → Add to archive.
3. Set Archive format to zip, choose the destination and filename, then select OK.
4. Open the resulting ZIP and confirm that it contains the original file.enc.

Windows can also create a basic archive with File Explorer: right-click the ENC file and choose Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder. This creates a ZIP containing the source file but provides fewer archive and encryption options than 7-Zip.

macOS: In Finder, select the ENC file and choose File → Compress. macOS creates a ZIP containing the original file. Select several files first to place them in the same archive.

Linux or macOS Terminal: Use the local zip utility:

zip archive.zip file.enc

To include a directory and its contents:

zip -r archive.zip folder-name

Windows PowerShell: Use the built-in archive command:

Compress-Archive -Path .\file.enc -DestinationPath .\file.zip

ZIP-level encryption is separate from any encryption inside the ENC file. The traditional zip -e option uses legacy ZipCrypto, which is weak; use a tool that supports AES-encrypted ZIP archives when an additional password is required, and confirm that the recipient's software supports that encryption method.

When the ENC data must be decrypted

If the recipient needs the readable document rather than the original ENC object, first open or decrypt the file with the application that created it, then archive the resulting document. An OpenSSL-generated file may require the original cipher, password, salt settings, and compatible OpenSSL options; there is no universal decryption command for arbitrary ENC files. Do not guess the cipher or overwrite the source.

Online tools and compatibility limits

There is no universal online ENC-to-ZIP converter because .enc has no fixed specification and may contain confidential encrypted data. For a non-sensitive file that only needs packaging, a browser archiver such as ezyZip can create a ZIP, but it is still packaging rather than format conversion; check the service's current processing and privacy terms before submitting the file.

Use 7-Zip or the operating system's local archive tools for confidential, password-protected, or regulated data. Test the finished ZIP by opening it with 7-Zip or the recipient's archive utility and, when possible, extracting the ENC file before sending it. Keep the original ENC file because the ZIP is only a container and may not be accepted by software that expects the file directly.
