What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp’s native 3D project format, created by Trimble SketchUp desktop and web applications. It stores model geometry, groups, components, materials, scenes, tags, dimensions, and SketchUp-specific editing data.

You encounter SKP files when downloading architectural models from 3D Warehouse, exchanging designs with SketchUp users, or opening projects created in SketchUp Free, SketchUp Go, or SketchUp Pro. An SKP file is intended for continued editing in SketchUp; many general-purpose 3D viewers and real-time engines cannot open it directly.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of glTF 2.0, a real-time 3D format supported by web viewers, browsers, game engines, AR platforms, and many 3D applications. A GLB normally stores mesh geometry, PBR materials, and image textures in one binary file, unlike the text-based .gltf format, which commonly references separate files.

Use GLB when the recipient needs a portable model for a website, product configurator, digital-twin viewer, AR preview, Unity or Unreal workflow, or long-term interchange. It generally produces a more convenient delivery file than an SKP project, but it does not preserve SketchUp’s editing features.

How to convert SKP to GLB

The simplest method is the built-in converter on 101convert.com, which requires no installed 3D software:

1. Open the SKP-to-GLB conversion page on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the source file, such as building.skp.
3. Select GLB as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated file, such as building.glb.
5. Open the result in a GLB-capable viewer and check geometry, textures, scale, and orientation before sharing it.

For a desktop workflow, export an interchange format from SketchUp Pro, then convert it with Blender:

1. In SketchUp, open the model and choose File → Export → 3D Model.
2. Export to .fbx when the available SketchUp edition supports FBX export. Use Collada .dae only when FBX is unavailable and the receiving Blender installation supports Collada import.
3. In Blender, choose File → Import → FBX and select the exported file.
4. Inspect the imported model, assign or correct materials if necessary, and verify its dimensions.
5. Choose File → Export → glTF 2.0, set the format to GLB, enable selected-object export if required, and save the result.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• SketchUp materials may need conversion to glTF’s metallic-roughness PBR model. Flat colors usually transfer more reliably than complex procedural materials.
• Texture images can be missing when the SKP file references unavailable local images. Keep source textures accessible during conversion and inspect the GLB after export.
• SketchUp scenes, tags, dimensions, section planes, shadows, styles, guides, and editing history are not equivalent to GLB data and may be discarded.
• GLB contains renderable scene data, not a fully editable SketchUp model. Groups and components may become ordinary mesh nodes, and parametric editing is lost.
• Large architectural SKP models can create oversized GLB files. Remove hidden objects, unnecessary furniture, duplicate geometry, and high-resolution textures before conversion when file size or browser performance matters.
• Check units and axis orientation after conversion. SketchUp commonly uses inches or meters depending on the model template, while the target application may interpret the exported scene using its own unit settings.
