Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A TIF image must be turned into a textured 3D object when a web viewer, AR application, or 3D editor requires a single .glb file. TIF is an image format, so the conversion normally means creating or supplying a mesh and using the TIF as its texture rather than directly changing one file type into the other.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also called TIFF, is a raster image format used for high-resolution scans, texture artwork, technical imagery, and print production. Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, scanners, and many CAD or GIS applications can create TIF files.

A TIF can contain lossless compression, 8-bit or 16-bit color, an alpha channel, multiple pages, and color profiles. In 3D work, it is usually a source texture or height map. It does not contain vertices, faces, UV coordinates, materials, cameras, or animation.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of glTF 2.0. It can package a polygon mesh, UV mapping, physically based materials, textures, cameras, and animations in one file for WebGL viewers, game engines, AR software, and 3D applications.

One GLB is easier to distribute than a .gltf file with separate binary and image assets. Standard glTF image handling commonly uses PNG or JPEG, so a TIF texture is normally converted and embedded during export.

How to actually convert TIF to GLB

Blender is the practical desktop method because it can import a TIF as an image texture, attach it to a mesh, and export the result as GLB.

  1. Install and open Blender, then create a mesh with Add → Mesh → Plane, or import an existing model with File → Import. A plane is suitable when the desired result is a flat image card.
  2. Select the mesh and open the Shading workspace. Create a material, add an Image Texture node, choose Open, and load the source.tif file.
  3. Connect the Image Texture Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. Use the image Alpha output and configure the material's blend mode if the TIF contains transparency.
  4. Check the UV layout. A newly created plane already has usable UV coordinates; an imported model may need Edit Mode → UV → Unwrap.
  5. For a height-map workflow, do not connect the TIF only to Base Color. Convert grayscale values into displacement or use the image to build actual geometry with a sufficiently subdivided mesh. A bump or normal connection changes shading but does not add physical surface detail.
  6. Export with File → Export → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf). Set the format to GLB, enable Selected Objects when appropriate, and export as model.glb. Keep texture embedding enabled so the result remains a single file.

If Blender's exporter does not accept the TIF encoding, open it in Blender's Image Editor and use Image → Save As to create texture.png or texture.jpg; replace the image in the material before exporting. PNG preserves transparency and lossless detail, while JPEG produces a smaller file without an alpha channel.

You can also attempt the conversion for free on 101convert.com without installing software. A normal image-to-GLB operation still requires the service to generate a mesh or place the image on a mesh; inspect the resulting model rather than assuming that the TIF's pixels became 3D geometry.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • A flat TIF becomes a flat textured surface unless you provide geometry or use an image-to-3D reconstruction process. GLB cannot preserve TIF-specific features such as multipage documents, layered editing data, or some 16-bit and color-profile metadata.
  • Use PNG when transparency or exact pixel values matter. Use JPEG for photographic textures where a smaller GLB is more important than lossless quality.
  • Large TIF dimensions increase memory use after conversion. Resize textures to the target viewer's requirements and inspect the GLB in a glTF viewer before distribution.
  • Some viewers ignore advanced Blender material nodes, displacement settings, and unsupported shader effects. Basic Principled BSDF materials, UVs, PNG/JPEG textures, and applied geometry provide the broadest compatibility.
