How to convert fbx to glb file

Web viewers, AR upload tools, and glTF-based runtimes often accept .glb files but not Autodesk .fbx assets. Converting produces a runtime-oriented model package that can include geometry, PBR materials, textures, and animation in one file.

What FBX is

FBX is Autodesk's proprietary 3D interchange format, originally developed by Kaydara. Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, Cinema 4D, scanning tools, and asset libraries commonly use it to exchange meshes, skeletal rigs, skin weights, blend shapes, cameras, lights, materials, textures, and animation.

FBX has binary and ASCII variants and multiple format versions. Support varies by application, so the same file can import with different material assignments, scale, bone orientation, or animation results in different software.

What GLB is

GLB is the binary container form of the open glTF 2.0 standard. A regular glTF asset may consist of a .gltf JSON file, a geometry .bin file, and separate image files; a GLB export normally embeds those resources in one .glb file.

glTF uses a metallic-roughness physically based rendering (PBR) material model and is intended for efficient runtime delivery. GLB is useful when a service requires one uploadable model file or when a web application, viewer, or real-time engine uses glTF assets.

GLB is not automatically smaller than FBX. File size is driven mainly by triangle count, texture dimensions, image encoding, animation data, and optional mesh compression.

Convert the file

Upload the .fbx file to the converter on 101convert.com, choose GLB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .glb. Keep the original texture images with the FBX: an FBX may reference external textures, and a converter cannot embed images that are unavailable or whose paths cannot be resolved.

Use Blender when the asset needs inspection, material repair, selective export, or controlled compression:

  1. Choose File → Import → FBX (.fbx) and open the source file.
  2. Inspect the model in Material Preview mode. Check mesh parts, texture assignments, UVs, armature deformation, blend shapes, and animation actions.
  3. Correct visible scale or orientation problems before export. Avoid applying transforms to a rigged asset until its animation and skinning have been checked.
  4. Select the required objects, then choose File → Export → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf).
  5. Set Format to glTF Binary (.glb). Enable Selected Objects when the Blender scene contains objects that must be excluded.
  6. Enable animation export if the destination needs animation clips. Enable morph target export when facial shapes or other blend shapes are required.
  7. Use Draco mesh compression only if the target loader supports the KHR_draco_mesh_compression extension. It reduces geometry data but unsupported viewers may fail to load the model.
  8. Open the exported file in the intended viewer or engine and verify its appearance and playback.

Quality and compatibility limits

FBX materials do not map directly to glTF PBR materials. FBX files may contain Lambert or Phong materials, Arnold or V-Ray shader networks, layered materials, procedural textures, and renderer-specific settings; GLB uses glTF PBR material properties. Base-color images usually transfer more reliably than custom shader effects.

Bake procedural textures, decals, ambient occlusion, and renderer-specific effects to image maps when visual matching matters. Preserve normal maps and alpha textures as PNG or another suitable lossless format; JPEG is appropriate only for opaque photographic color textures where artifacts are acceptable.

glTF supports meshes, skinning, skeletal animation, morph targets, cameras, punctual lights, and defined PBR extensions, but it does not preserve every FBX feature. Constraints, IK controls, simulations, NURBS editing data, custom metadata, and application-specific animation controllers may be omitted or reduced to evaluated transforms. Bake final animation before export when the source depends on constraints or simulation.

Axis conversion and unit metadata can produce rotated or incorrectly sized assets. Check model orientation, camera direction, animation motion, and real-world scale in the target application rather than relying only on the conversion result.

For web delivery, reduce unnecessary geometry and oversized textures before export. Test alpha mode, normal-map appearance, skinning, morph targets, animation clips, triangle count, and texture loading in the actual destination software.

Do I need to install any software to convert FBX to GLB?

No. The FBX to GLB conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid FBX file for this FBX to GLB conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.
