Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A PSD is usually converted to GLB when a 3D viewer, web application, AR tool, or game engine requires a single portable 3D asset. Because PSD stores layered 2D artwork and GLB stores 3D geometry, the conversion normally creates a textured plane rather than reconstructing a full 3D model.

What the PSD format is

PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native layered image format. It can contain raster pixels, text, vector shapes, masks, adjustment layers, transparency, multiple channels, and editable layer effects.

Photoshop creates PSD files, and they are also commonly produced or edited by applications such as GIMP, Affinity Photo, and Krita. In 3D work, PSD files are often used as texture sources for color, opacity, roughness, normal-map preparation, decals, UI artwork, and layered concept designs.

Many PSD features do not have a direct equivalent in GLB. Layer groups, live text, adjustment layers, blend modes, and Photoshop effects generally need to be rasterized before they can be displayed as part of a 3D asset.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of glTF, a real-time 3D format that can contain meshes, materials, textures, cameras, animations, and scene data in one file. It is used by web viewers, 3D configurators, AR applications, game engines, and modeling software.

A GLB embeds its referenced image textures, unlike a text-based .gltf file that commonly stores geometry and references separate images. This makes GLB easier to upload, share, archive, and load as a single asset. It does not, however, preserve Photoshop layers or provide editable 2D composition data.

How to actually convert PSD to GLB

For a textured flat surface in Blender

  1. Open the PSD in Photoshop, GIMP, or another application that can read its layers.
  2. Set the intended canvas dimensions and color appearance, then hide or show layers as required.
  3. Flatten or render the visible composition and export it as texture.png. Use PNG when transparency or lossless edges are required; use JPEG only for opaque photographic artwork where a smaller texture is preferable.
  4. Open Blender and create a plane with Shift → A → Mesh → Plane. Scale the plane to the desired proportions.
  5. Create a material in the Material Properties panel. Add an Image Texture node, open texture.png, and connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. Connect its Alpha output to Principled BSDF Alpha if the image has transparency.
  6. For transparent artwork, set Material Properties → Settings → Surface → Render Method → Dithered or the equivalent transparent mode available in the installed Blender version. Adjust the material’s alpha settings if the target viewer requires them.
  7. Check the UV map and material in Material Preview or Rendered view. Blender’s default plane UVs cover the full image.
  8. Select the plane and choose File → Export → glTF 2.0. Set the format to GLB, enable Selected Objects if needed, and export as artwork.glb.

For separate PSD layers

Export each required layer or layer group as an individual PNG, then import those images as separate planes in Blender. Place the planes at different depths, or arrange them around simple geometry, and assign one material per image before exporting the complete scene as GLB. Photoshop’s File → Export → Layers to Files can create separate image files; confirm that the export preserves transparency.

Using an online converter

You can try converting the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Automated conversion can only produce a useful GLB when the service defines how the 2D PSD becomes 3D geometry; for predictable results, create the plane, material, UVs, and export settings in Blender.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • A PSD-to-GLB operation does not infer depth, topology, camera perspective, or physically based materials from ordinary 2D layers. A genuine 3D model must be modeled separately in Blender or another 3D application.
  • Flattening removes editable layers, text, masks, adjustment layers, and blend modes. Keep the original PSD as the editable source.
  • Use a texture resolution appropriate for the target device. Large 4K or 8K images increase GLB size and memory use; reduce the image after checking the required display distance.
  • For web and mobile delivery, test PNG transparency and material alpha behavior in the actual GLB viewer. Alpha sorting and partially transparent surfaces can render differently between engines.
  • GLB embeds image data during export when Blender’s glTF export options are configured for a binary GLB. Reopen the exported file in a separate viewer to verify that textures, UVs, scale, and transparency survived.
