Model type
A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.
Model size (longest side)
Height
Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.
Mesh detail
More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.
Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A web viewer, game engine, AR tool, or 3D editor may require a GLB asset, while the available DDS file contains only a texture. Converting it therefore requires turning the image into a material on geometry, not simply changing the filename extension.
What the DDS format is
DDS (DirectDraw Surface) is a texture container used in game engines, 3D applications, and real-time rendering pipelines. It commonly stores GPU-compressed formats such as BC1, BC3, and BC7, along with mipmaps and sometimes alpha channels. Game engines, texture-conversion tools, and applications such as NVIDIA Texture Tools, DirectXTex, and various game editors create or export DDS files. You typically encounter DDS files in game texture folders, material libraries, and assets prepared for DirectX-based rendering.
What the GLB format is
GLB is the binary form of glTF, a format for complete 3D scenes. A GLB can contain meshes, materials, textures, cameras, animations, and scene metadata in one file, making it suitable for WebGL viewers, game engines, AR platforms, and applications such as Blender. Unlike DDS, GLB is not an image-only format; it needs geometry or another scene object to display a texture.
How to actually convert DDS to GLB
1. Convert the DDS texture to PNG
Blender versions do not consistently provide native DDS import support, so first decode the texture with DirectXTex. Download the texconv executable from the DirectXTex tools, open a terminal in the folder containing the DDS file, and run:
texconv -ft PNG -o converted texture.dds
This creates converted/texture.png. Preserve alpha when the DDS uses transparency; avoid converting normal maps or roughness maps as ordinary color images if the target material needs those maps separately.
2. Create geometry and apply the texture in Blender
- Open Blender and create a plane with Add → Mesh → Plane. A plane is appropriate when the DDS is a flat surface such as a decal, billboard, or UI-like image; use an existing model instead when the texture belongs to a 3D asset.
- Open the Shading workspace, create a material, and add an Image Texture node with
texture.png. - Connect the Image Texture Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. Connect its Alpha output to Principled BSDF Alpha when transparency is required.
- For transparent images, set Material Properties → Settings → Surface → Render Method to Blended or Dithered, depending on the Blender version and the desired result.
- Ensure the plane has UV coordinates through Edit Mode → UV → Unwrap or the default plane UV map.
3. Export the scene as GLB
Select the textured object and choose File → Export → glTF 2.0. Set Format to glTF Binary (.glb), enable Selected Objects if only that object should be exported, and enable Images → Embed when the texture must be stored inside the GLB. Click Export glTF 2.0 and save the result as texture.glb.
You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software, if that converter accepts the DDS-to-GLB combination and the resulting scene structure meets your needs.
Quality and compatibility limitations
A DDS-to-GLB conversion cannot recover mesh geometry, UV layouts, material assignments, or animations that are not present in the DDS. It produces a textured plane or requires a separate 3D model. DDS compression artifacts and limited source resolution remain in the exported texture; converting to PNG changes the container but does not restore lost detail.
For a normal map, set the image texture to Non-Color and connect it to the Principled BSDF Normal input through a Normal Map node. For roughness, metallic, or ambient-occlusion maps, use separate image textures with the correct color-space settings. Verify the exported GLB in a glTF viewer because transparency, double-sided materials, mipmaps, and unsupported shader nodes can render differently between applications.
