Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A DDS file is normally a texture, while an FBX file normally contains 3D geometry, materials, cameras, and animation. The conversion is needed when a game texture must be attached to a mesh and delivered to software such as Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Unity, or Unreal Engine; a DDS file by itself cannot provide the geometry required for a meaningful FBX scene.

What the DDS format is

DDS, or DirectDraw Surface, is a raster texture format used extensively in 3D games and real-time rendering. It can store compressed GPU texture formats such as BC1, BC3, and BC7, along with mipmaps, cube maps, alpha channels, and sometimes normal maps.

Game engines, DirectX texture tools, material editors, and applications such as GIMP or Photoshop with DDS support create DDS files. You commonly encounter files such as diffuse.dds, normal.dds, and roughness.dds inside game asset folders. DDS is an image format, not a model or scene format.

What the FBX format is

FBX is an Autodesk scene-exchange format for polygon meshes, skeletons, skin weights, materials, cameras, lights, and animation. Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine, and many asset pipelines can import or export FBX.

FBX is useful when a model must move between different 3D applications while retaining scene structure, transforms, rigging, or animation. An FBX file may reference external texture images or embed them, depending on the exporter and import settings.

How to actually convert DDS to FBX

A DDS-only file cannot be converted into a complete 3D model. You need an existing mesh, such as model.obj, model.gltf, or a model extracted through a legally permitted game-asset workflow.

  1. Install and open Blender, then choose File → Import and select the source mesh format.
  2. Open the Shading workspace. Add an Image Texture node, choose diffuse.dds, and connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input.
  3. For a normal map, load normal.dds, set its image color space to Non-Color, connect it through a Normal Map node, and connect that node to the shader's Normal input.
  4. For an alpha texture, connect the image Alpha output to Principled BSDF Alpha and set the material's blend mode to the required opaque, clipped, or blended mode.
  5. Select the mesh and choose File → Export → FBX (.fbx). Enable Selected Objects when exporting only the prepared asset, use Path Mode: Copy, and enable the embedded-media option if the receiving application supports embedded textures.
  6. Open the resulting model.fbx in the destination application and check the material links, UVs, scale, normals, and transparency.

If you only need a texture conversion, export or convert the DDS to .png or .tga instead of creating an FBX. You can also try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software, but an online file conversion cannot generate missing mesh geometry from a texture.

Quality and compatibility limits

FBX export does not necessarily preserve every DDS compression format. Some programs cannot read BC-compressed DDS files, embedded DDS media, cube maps, or specialized normal-map layouts. Converting the texture to 8-bit PNG or TGA before export generally improves compatibility but may increase file size and remove GPU-compressed storage.

Check the DDS color space before connecting it: base-color and emissive textures normally use sRGB, while normal, roughness, metallic, and ambient-occlusion maps normally use Non-Color data. FBX stores UV coordinates and material assignments, but applications may rebuild shaders differently, so verify the result rather than expecting identical viewport appearance.
