mdl to fbx file conversion

.mdl is not a single universal 3D format. It can refer to different model types, including Animation:Master files and several game-engine model formats. Because of that, the right conversion method depends on the exact MDL variant you have.

Direct MDL to FBX conversion is not always possible. Some tools may support specific MDL variants, but compatibility is limited and should be checked for your file type before starting.

Tools such as AnyCAD Exchange3D may work for certain workflows, but they are not guaranteed to support every MDL format. If direct conversion is unavailable, the most reliable approach is to convert the file to an intermediate format first, such as .obj, .dae, or .3ds, and then export to .fbx from a 3D editor.

Typical workflow:

1. Identify the exact MDL variant.
2. Open the file in software that supports that format, or use a dedicated converter.
3. Export or convert to an intermediate format if FBX export is not available.
4. Import the intermediate file into a 3D application such as Blender or 3ds Max.
5. Use File → Export and choose .fbx.

If your file is an Animation:Master MDL, use software or exporters that specifically support Animation:Master content. If it is a game MDL file, you may need a format-specific importer before you can move it into a program that exports FBX.

Important: Materials, textures, animations, skeletons, and scale may not transfer perfectly between formats. After conversion, open the FBX in the target application and verify that the model looks correct.
