How to convert gltf to fbx file

A conversion is needed when a game engine, 3D application, or production pipeline accepts FBX but cannot import a glTF scene reliably. FBX is also commonly requested for rigging, animation, and interchange with Autodesk-based tools.

What the glTF format is

glTF (GL Transmission Format) is a royalty-free Khronos Group format for delivering and rendering 3D scenes efficiently. It can store meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, skinning data, morph targets, and animations, including physically based rendering (PBR) material data.

A .gltf file is a JSON scene description that normally references an external .bin file and image textures. A .glb file is the binary form and usually packages the scene, geometry, and images in one container. glTF is common in browser-based viewers, WebXR, asset libraries, and real-time applications; Blender, game engines, and 3D tools can import or export it, sometimes through an add-on or package.

What the FBX format is

FBX (Filmbox) is Autodesk's proprietary 3D interchange format. It transfers geometry, materials, skeletons, cameras, lights, animation, and scene hierarchy between applications such as Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Unity, Unreal Engine, and character-animation pipelines.

FBX is useful when the destination expects Autodesk-compatible scene data or an established skeletal-animation workflow. It has binary and ASCII variants; binary FBX is the usual production choice. Its broader application support does not guarantee identical results across software because FBX importers interpret materials, units, axes, and animation differently.

Convert glTF to FBX online

You can convert the file on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the .gltf or .glb file, choose FBX as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. For a .gltf source, include its referenced .bin and texture files if the converter requests them; uploading only the JSON file can produce an incomplete scene.

Convert glTF to FBX with Blender

Blender is the most practical desktop option when you need to inspect the scene, adjust axes or scale, select objects, or troubleshoot materials and animation before exporting.

  1. Install a current Blender release and open it.
  2. Choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf).
  3. Select the source file. Keep a .gltf file together with its referenced .bin and image files in their original relative paths.
  4. Inspect the imported meshes, armatures, textures, materials, hierarchy, and animation actions. Delete unwanted objects and select the objects that belong in the FBX.
  5. Choose File → Export → FBX (.fbx).
  6. Enable Selected Objects when only the selected scene elements should be exported.
  7. Set Path Mode to Copy. Enable the adjacent embed-media option when the receiving application needs image textures packaged with the FBX; otherwise copy the texture folder with the exported file.
  8. Set Forward and Up to the destination application's coordinate system. Blender commonly exports with -Y Forward and Z Up, but the correct values depend on the receiving software.
  9. Use Apply Transform only when the destination requires orientation and scale to be baked into the exported FBX. Avoid changing transforms on an animated rig unless the result has been tested.
  10. Click Export FBX, then reopen the file in the target application and check scale, axes, hierarchy, textures, skin deformation, and every animation.

For repeatable batch jobs, Blender can run in background mode with a Python script:

blender --background --python convert.py -- input.glb output.fbx

The script must import the glTF scene, select the intended objects, configure the FBX export settings, and call Blender's FBX exporter. A graphical conversion is preferable for a one-off file because it permits visual inspection before export.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • glTF PBR materials may become conventional FBX material nodes with different shader names, texture connections, or metallic and roughness behavior. Reconnect or rebuild materials when the target application does not interpret the exported maps automatically.
  • External textures, packed images, glTF extensions, procedural effects, and engine-specific shaders may not survive conversion. Verify every image path and keep the original resource files.
  • Skinning and animation can change because applications interpret bone axes, bind poses, constraints, morph targets, animation clips, and frame rates differently. Test each action on the converted rig.
  • Conversion can alter units, object axes, origins, smoothing, tangents, modifiers, instancing, and visibility. Confirm the destination's unit scale and coordinate convention before export.
  • Some applications require a particular FBX compatibility version or do not support all FBX features. If the destination reports an unsupported file, export with a compatible Blender version or use the destination application's documented FBX version requirements.

Retain the original glTF or GLB and all external resources so the export can be repeated with different FBX settings.
