SketchUp uses the .skp format for editing and project delivery, while many web viewers, game engines, and 3D libraries provide models as .gltf or .glb. Converting the model lets you inspect and modify it in SketchUp, although the conversion usually requires an intermediate format.

What the GLTF format is

glTF (GL Transmission Format) is a 3D delivery format designed for efficient loading in browsers, viewers, augmented-reality applications, and real-time engines. A .gltf file normally references separate binary geometry and image files; a .glb file packages the JSON scene, mesh data, and textures into one binary container.

Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, Sketchfab downloads, game engines, CAD viewers, and web-based 3D tools commonly create or distribute glTF files. The format can store meshes, materials, PBR textures, cameras, lights, node hierarchies, animations, skinning, morph targets, and instancing.

What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp's native project format. It stores SketchUp geometry, groups, components, scenes, tags, materials, styles, dimensions, and model metadata for continued editing in SketchUp.

SKP is appropriate when the recipient needs to work in SketchUp, produce architectural or construction documentation, create scenes, place components, or exchange a model with SketchUp-based workflows. It preserves SketchUp-specific organization better than a general interchange format, but it is not a universal 3D format and is not intended for animation.

How to actually convert GLTF to SKP

The most dependable desktop workflow is Blender → Collada DAE → SketchUp. Blender reads both glTF variants, and SketchUp commonly imports Collada files.

1. Install Blender and open it. Remove the default objects if they are not needed.
2. Choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf), then select the source file. Keep the accompanying texture directory beside the .gltf file; otherwise referenced images may not load.
3. Check the imported model's scale, orientation, materials, and object hierarchy. Apply transformations with Object → Apply → All Transforms if the scene contains inconsistent scale or rotation.
4. For a SketchUp-friendly result, reduce unnecessary detail with Blender's Decimate modifier, remove hidden objects, and separate or join objects as needed. Apply modifiers before export when the exported geometry must match the viewport.
5. Choose File → Export → Collada (.dae). Enable selection-only export when appropriate, and enable texture export or texture copying if those options are shown. Save the result as model.dae in a folder that also contains its image textures.
6. In SketchUp Pro, choose File → Import, select model.dae, and set the correct import units. After the model loads, inspect its scale, face orientation, materials, and component structure.
7. Save the SketchUp project with File → Save As and choose the required SketchUp version, creating model.skp.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• Materials are not identical across formats. glTF commonly uses metallic-roughness PBR materials, while SketchUp uses simpler material properties. Base color usually transfers, but metallic, roughness, normal, occlusion, emissive, and transparency behavior can change.
• Animations, cameras, lights, skinning, morph targets, and interactive glTF features generally do not become editable SketchUp features. The conversion normally retains static mesh geometry only.
• Texture paths can break during the DAE step. Keep image files in a stable relative folder, use common formats such as PNG or JPEG, and relink materials in SketchUp if images appear missing.
• glTF scenes may use meters, while SketchUp projects are often modeled in inches, feet, or millimeters. Verify a known dimension after import and correct the model scale before saving.
• Dense scans and game assets can create thousands of small objects or millions of polygons. Simplify geometry before export to prevent slow orbiting, large SKP files, and difficult editing.
• GLTF meshes are often triangulated. SketchUp may display triangulation, internal edges, or reversed faces after import; use SketchUp's face-orientation tools and cleanup operations where necessary.
