What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of glTF 2.0, a compact 3D format used for web viewers, real-time applications, augmented reality, game engines, and model exchange. A single GLB file can contain meshes, materials, UV coordinates, textures, cameras, animations, and scene hierarchy.

Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, game engines, CAD viewers, and online 3D platforms can create or export GLB files. The format commonly uses physically based materials with base color, metallic, roughness, normal, and occlusion data.

What the SKP format is

SKP is the native project format of SketchUp. It is used for architectural plans, interiors, furniture, construction concepts, site models, and other editable 3D scenes.

SKP preserves SketchUp-specific data such as components, groups, scenes, section planes, tags, styles, dimensions, and SketchUp materials. It is preferable when the recipient needs to continue modeling in SketchUp rather than only view the geometry.

How to convert GLB to SKP

Using Blender and SketchUp

1. Install Blender and SketchUp Desktop. Blender provides the GLB importer, while SketchUp can import the intermediate COLLADA format.
2. In Blender, choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf) and select the GLB file.
3. Check the model orientation, dimensions, object hierarchy, materials, and textures. GLB files normally use meters, while the SketchUp model template may use millimeters, centimeters, inches, or feet.
4. If necessary, scale the model in Blender and apply the transform with Object → Apply → Scale. Apply rotation as well if the model imports with an incorrect axis orientation.
5. Export an intermediate file through File → Export → Collada (.dae). Enable Selected Objects if only part of the scene should be transferred. Keep the exported texture files with the DAE file when Blender creates external image references.
6. In SketchUp, choose File → Import, select .dae or COLLADA as the file type, and open the exported file.
7. Set the correct import units if SketchUp asks for them. Inspect the model, repair materials or reversed faces if required, then choose File → Save As and save the result as .skp.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• Animation, rigging, morph targets, and cameras generally do not transfer into a normal SketchUp model. The conversion is mainly suitable for static geometry.
• GLB PBR materials may be simplified during the GLB-to-DAE-to-SKP process. Base color usually transfers more reliably than metallic, roughness, ambient occlusion, transmission, or clearcoat effects.
• Embedded GLB textures may be extracted or referenced differently by Blender and the COLLADA exporter. Missing texture paths cause plain or incorrectly colored surfaces in SketchUp.
• High-polygon scans and game assets can make the SKP file slow to orbit and edit. Decimate unnecessary geometry in Blender before export, while preserving UVs if textures matter.
• Triangulation, normals, smoothing, and face orientation can change between formats. Use SketchUp’s face orientation tools and reverse incorrectly oriented faces after import.
• SketchUp imports the result as geometry; it does not automatically recreate SketchUp-native components, tags, scenes, dimensions, or parametric architectural objects from GLB metadata.
