Free online WRL to SKP converter

SketchUp requires an .skp project for native editing, while older CAD, visualization, and 3D-viewer software often exports models as .wrl. Converting the file brings its polygonal VRML geometry into SketchUp for inspection, layout, or further modeling.

What the WRL format is

WRL is the usual extension for VRML, the Virtual Reality Modeling Language. It describes polygonal 3D geometry, colors, materials, textures, viewpoints, lights, and, depending on the VRML version, animation or interaction data. CAD programs, 3D authoring tools, engineering and medical visualization systems, and older web-based 3D applications use VRML.

Most WRL files are plain-text scene descriptions. Some applications distribute compressed VRML files with the .wrz extension; decompress a WRZ file before importing it if the chosen converter does not support it directly. Texture images referenced by relative or absolute paths must remain available during conversion.

What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp's native project format. It can store SketchUp geometry, groups, components, materials, scenes, styles, tags, dimensions, and other editing and presentation data. SKP is the appropriate target when the model must be modified in SketchUp or combined with architectural, interior, or site geometry.

SKP is a proprietary application format rather than a general-purpose exchange format. Other 3D programs may require COLLADA, OBJ, or another intermediary format instead of opening the resulting file directly.

How to convert WRL to SKP online

1. Open the WRL-to-SKP converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .wrl file. Include its texture files or preserve the original folder structure if the converter provides a texture upload option.
3. Choose SKP as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the generated .skp file and open it in SketchUp. Check scale, materials, orientation, and missing geometry before using it in a project.

Online conversion is suitable for a quick file transfer, but a desktop workflow gives more control over mesh cleanup, texture paths, coordinate orientation, and export settings.

How to convert WRL to SKP with desktop software

1. Open the file in Blender using File → Import → X3D/VRML 2.0. The importer name and availability depend on the Blender version; enable the relevant X3D/VRML add-on in Edit → Preferences → Add-ons if necessary.
2. Inspect the imported mesh. Remove unwanted cameras and lights, correct the up-axis and orientation, repair visibly broken surfaces, and reduce excessive tessellation when the model is too dense for SketchUp.
3. Export COLLADA with File → Export → Collada (.dae) when that exporter is available. Apply transforms and use Selection Only when appropriate. If the Blender installation lacks COLLADA support, use another mesh converter that can read VRML and write a format supported by the target SketchUp edition.
4. In SketchUp desktop, choose File → Import, select the .dae file, and set the import units or scale correctly. COLLADA import availability varies by SketchUp edition and version.
5. Verify a known dimension, then use SketchUp's Tape Measure tool to rescale the model if required. Save it with File → Save As and select the required SketchUp version to create the .skp file.

Quality and compatibility limits

• VRML normally contains tessellated polygons. Conversion does not recreate editable SketchUp solids, parametric CAD features, or original NURBS surfaces; a highly detailed mesh can make the SKP file slow and difficult to edit.
• VRML scripts, sensors, viewpoints, animations, and interactive behavior normally do not transfer. The SKP result is generally static geometry.
• Materials and textures can be lost when images are embedded in an unsupported way, referenced by unavailable absolute paths, stored in unsupported formats, or omitted from the upload. Keep the WRL file and texture folders together and relink materials after import if necessary.
• Coordinate systems and unit conventions differ between VRML, Blender, COLLADA, and SketchUp. Check a known measurement instead of relying on the apparent viewport size.
• Very large meshes may exceed practical SketchUp performance limits. Remove hidden objects, merge or simplify unnecessary geometry, and divide the model into components before saving when appropriate.
• Opening the SKP file in an older SketchUp release may require saving to that release's compatible version; newer SketchUp features are not necessarily preserved when exporting backward.
