What the 3MF format is

3MF, or 3D Manufacturing Format, is a ZIP-based package designed for additive manufacturing. It can contain one or more mesh objects, model units, colors, materials, textures, build information, and print-related metadata in XML-based files.

3MF files are commonly created by slicers and 3D-printing applications such as PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Ultimaker Cura, Microsoft 3D Builder, and some CAD programs. You usually encounter them when downloading a printable model, preparing a project for a 3D printer, or exchanging manufacturing data.

What the SKP format is

SKP is the native project format of SketchUp. It stores polygonal geometry together with groups, components, scenes, materials, camera views, and model organization used for architectural, interior, product, and construction design.

SKP is preferable when the model must be edited in SketchUp, placed into a larger architectural scene, annotated, or exchanged with SketchUp users. Unlike a basic STL export, an SKP project can preserve SketchUp-specific structure such as named components and scene settings.

How to convert 3MF to SKP

Using the online converter

1. Open the 101convert.com converter for 3MF to SKP.
2. Upload the .3mf file.
3. Select SKP as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .skp file and open it in SketchUp.

This method does not require an installed modeling application. Check the downloaded model's scale, object placement, materials, and geometry before using it in a design.

Using a desktop mesh workflow

1. Open the 3MF file in Microsoft 3D Builder or a current FreeCAD installation with 3MF support.
2. Check the model orientation, repair warnings, object count, and measurement units.
3. Export the geometry as .stl using Save as or File → Export. Binary STL is usually smaller than ASCII STL.
4. Open SketchUp Pro and choose File → Import.
5. Select the STL file, set the correct import units, and import it.
6. Place the imported mesh in the model, then use File → Save As and save it as .skp.

If the installed SketchUp edition does not provide STL import, use a current SketchUp version or an STL importer compatible with that edition. FreeCAD can also export OBJ in installations that support the format; OBJ is useful when color or material data must be tested, but SketchUp OBJ support depends on the edition and importer.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion normally produces mesh geometry, not editable SketchUp faces, groups, or parametric CAD solids. A 3MF object made from millions of triangles can create a large SKP file and slow orbiting, selection, and saving. Reduce the mesh in the intermediate application before importing when the original model is unnecessarily dense.

STL carries geometry and scale but does not carry the full 3MF package. Colors, textures, materials, print profiles, supports, build plates, and manufacturing metadata are generally lost during a 3MF-to-STL conversion. Preserve the original 3MF if those details may be needed later.

Verify units because 3MF stores model-unit information while STL has no standardized unit declaration. A model imported at the wrong unit may appear 25.4 times too large or too small. Measure a known feature in SketchUp and correct the scale before saving the final SKP file.

Multiple 3MF objects may arrive as separate meshes or as one combined mesh, depending on the converter. Inspect the Outliner after import and create groups or components in SketchUp if the objects need independent editing.
