How to perform the conversion

There is no universal one-click conversion path from 3MF to USDA because the formats serve different purposes: 3MF is print-focused, while USDA is scene-focused. The best workflow is usually to use a desktop 3D application or pipeline tool that can import 3MF and export USD/USDA.

1. Open the .3mf file in a compatible application that supports both formats, such as Blender with USD support, or another 3D tool that can import 3MF and export USD.
2. Check the imported model for scale, orientation, materials, and any missing textures. 3MF-specific print metadata usually does not carry over to USDA.
3. Export the scene as USD ASCII using the application’s export function. In many tools this is found under File → Export → Universal Scene Description or a similar menu path.
4. Save the output with the .usda extension if the exporter offers a choice between USD variants.

If your software exports only binary USD, you may need an additional USD utility to convert the result to USDA. In that case, export to .usd first, then convert to ASCII USDA with a USD-capable tool.

Notes on quality, compatibility, or limitations

3MF and USDA are not equivalent formats, so some information may be lost during conversion. Geometry usually transfers well, but 3D printing metadata such as slicer settings, build plate placement, and printer-specific instructions generally has no direct USDA equivalent.

Materials and colors may also change depending on the importer/exporter used. USDA supports rich scene descriptions, but a 3MF model may be flattened into a simpler mesh-based scene during import. If the source file contains multiple objects, assemblies, or textures, verify the result carefully after conversion.

For best results, use software that explicitly supports both 3MF import and USD/USDA export, and always inspect the converted file in a USD viewer before using it in production.
