A 3MF model must be turned into a 2D preview when a website, catalog, document, or image-based workflow accepts WEBP but cannot display 3D files. The conversion renders a view of the model; it does not preserve editable geometry, materials, print settings, or other 3MF data.
What the 3MF format is
3MF is a ZIP-based 3D printing package defined by the 3MF Consortium. It can contain one or more meshes, object placement, units, colors, materials, textures, supports, and slicer settings in XML and related resource files.
CAD and modeling applications such as Autodesk Fusion and Microsoft 3D Builder can create 3MF files. Slicers including PrusaSlicer and UltiMaker Cura commonly open or save them as projects containing models and print configuration. You usually encounter 3MF files when downloading a 3D-printable design or moving a model between CAD software and a slicer.
What the WEBP format is
WEBP is a 2D raster image format intended for web pages, previews, product listings, and documentation. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation; a rendered model preview normally uses a single lossy or lossless image.
WEBP often produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality. It is useful when the destination accepts browser images but has no 3D viewer. It cannot contain a 3D mesh, camera-independent geometry, slicer metadata, or an interactive model.
How to actually convert 3MF to WEBP
Using the built-in converter:
- Open the 3MF-to-WEBP conversion page on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
- Upload the
.3mffile and select WEBP as the output format. - Start the conversion and download the resulting
.webpimage.
The service must render the 3MF before producing an image. If the source contains multiple objects or scenes, check the generated preview and use a desktop renderer when you need a specific camera angle, lighting setup, or object selection.
For controlled rendering on a computer:
- Open the file in PrusaSlicer with File → Open project or in another application that supports 3MF.
- Set the desired camera angle, zoom, background, and visibility of model parts, then capture the viewport as PNG. A renderer such as Blender can provide better lighting and anti-aliasing when a compatible 3MF importer is installed.
- Convert the rendered PNG with ImageMagick:
magick render.png -quality 85 preview.webp
Use -define webp:lossless=true instead of -quality 85 when exact pixel preservation matters. To create a transparent preview, render or save a PNG with an alpha channel and use an image editor or ImageMagick that preserves transparency.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
The output resolution is determined by the render or screenshot, not by the 3MF mesh resolution alone. A viewport screenshot can include interface elements and typically gives lower quality than a dedicated render at a chosen size.
Lossy WEBP quality values around 80–90 are generally suitable for previews; increase the value for fine edges, small text, or wireframe details. Use lossless WEBP when the image contains hard-edged diagrams or transparency that shows compression artifacts.
Different 3MF readers may interpret materials, textures, units, build plates, and print profiles differently. Verify the rendered appearance before publishing. Keep the original 3MF separately when recipients may need to print, edit, inspect, or archive the model.
