What the STP format is

STP, also called STEP, is a neutral CAD exchange format based on the ISO 10303 standard. It stores precise solid, surface, assembly, and product-structure data rather than pixels, so compatible CAD software can inspect measurements and edit model geometry.

Mechanical design and manufacturing applications such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion, FreeCAD, CATIA, Siemens NX, and PTC Creo create or import .stp and .step files. You typically encounter STP files when receiving supplier models, exchanging designs between different CAD systems, or archiving engineering data.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format intended for web and general image delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, although an STP conversion normally produces one static rendered view.

WEBP is useful for product thumbnails, browser previews, documentation, and file sharing because it usually produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality. It cannot store CAD solids, dimensions, assembly relationships, editable surfaces, or other STP data.

How to actually convert STP to WEBP

1. Open the STP-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .stp or .step file.
3. Choose WEBP as the output format and start the conversion.
4. If rendering options are available, select the model view, image dimensions, background, and quality.
5. Download the resulting .webp image and check that all required parts are visible.

This process renders the CAD model into a 2D image before encoding that image as WEBP; it does not create an editable WEBP version of the model.

Convert with FreeCAD and ImageMagick

1. Install FreeCAD and open the STP file with File → Open.
2. Set the required camera angle using the standard view controls, fit the model to the window, and hide construction geometry or unwanted parts.
3. Save an intermediate raster image with View → Save image..., using PNG when available. Set a sufficiently large width and height for the final use.
4. Convert the raster file with ImageMagick:

Use -quality 100 for maximum lossy quality, or use lossless WebP with:

magick rendered.png -define webp:lossless=true model.webp

For repeated conversions, use the same camera orientation, output dimensions, background, and quality setting so the resulting product images remain consistent.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

STP geometry is mathematically precise, but the rendered image depends on tessellation, antialiasing, lighting, camera position, and output resolution. Render at a larger size than the final display size when fine edges or small features must remain legible.

Lossy WEBP compression can create halos around high-contrast CAD edges and text. Use lossless WebP for diagrams, dimensioned drawings, or images with thin linework; use quality values around 80–90 for photographic-style shaded model previews.

Transparent backgrounds require an alpha-capable render and a WEBP encoder that preserves alpha. A white or solid background is safer for applications that do not display WebP transparency correctly.

Keep the original STP file alongside the WEBP when downstream users need measurements, revisions, or manufacturing data. The WEBP is only a visual derivative and cannot be converted back into the original CAD geometry.
