How to convert stp to pdf file

Recipients often need a printable drawing or review copy when they do not have CAD software that can open an STP file. Exporting the model to PDF also provides a fixed file for quotations, approvals, email, and archiving.

What the STP format is

STP, also called STEP, is an ISO-standard CAD exchange format usually stored as .stp or .step. It stores precise 3D geometry and can include assemblies, product structure, colors, and some metadata. It normally does not contain a finished 2D drawing sheet with a title block, dimensions, tolerances, or annotations.

Mechanical and industrial CAD systems such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Creo, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, and FreeCAD import and export STEP. Suppliers, manufacturers, contractors, and customers commonly exchange it when their native CAD applications or file formats differ.

What the PDF format is

PDF preserves page size, layout, fonts, vector lines, raster images, and annotations across operating systems. It is suitable for review, printing, signatures, quotations, manufacturing documentation, and storage.

A standard PDF is not an editable CAD model. The conversion can produce a dimensioned 2D drawing, a set of projected views, or a rendered image. Some specialist applications can embed an interactive 3D model in a PDF, but support for PDF 3D content is limited in current general-purpose viewers; a normal 2D PDF is more widely compatible.

How to convert an STP file to PDF

FreeCAD desktop method

FreeCAD is a free option when the STEP file contains geometry but no prepared drawing sheet.

  1. Open the file with File → Open and select .stp or .step. Large assemblies may take several minutes to import.
  2. Switch to the TechDraw workbench.
  3. Create a page with TechDraw → Insert Page using Template and select the required paper size, such as A4 or A3.
  4. Select the imported part or assembly and use TechDraw → Insert View. Set the projection direction, scale, display mode, and line visibility in the view properties.
  5. Insert front, top, side, section, or isometric views as required. Add dimensions, labels, and notes with the TechDraw tools. FreeCAD cannot reliably reconstruct design intent or missing source dimensions from neutral geometry.
  6. Select the TechDraw page and use its context menu command, commonly Export Page as PDF. Save the result as drawing.pdf.

TechDraw is preferable to a direct viewport export because it defines the sheet size, scale, linework, and printable layout. A viewport image or PDF export, where available in the installed FreeCAD version, is suitable only for a quick visual reference.

Commercial CAD software

When the model is already open in SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion, Creo, CATIA, Siemens NX, or another CAD system, create a drawing from the imported part or assembly. Set the sheet size, units, projection views, hidden-line display, sections, dimensions, tolerances, and line weights, then use the application's File → Save As or File → Export → PDF command. This workflow provides better engineering control than a generic converter.

If the source application already contains a drawing file associated with the model, export that drawing instead of generating a new sheet from the STP geometry.

Online conversion

For a nonconfidential model and a quick visual result, use a service such as CAD Exchanger Web or Aspose.3D only after confirming that its current format list accepts STEP and produces the required type of PDF. Online services can change supported formats, file-size limits, and rendering behavior.

Upload only files that may be processed by a third party. Many online converters create a flat rendered page rather than a dimensioned technical drawing, and they may not preserve assembly structure, hidden lines, units, or annotations. Use FreeCAD or the originating CAD system when the model is proprietary or the PDF will be used for manufacturing.

Quality and compatibility checks

  • Verify units: STEP normally records units, but an incorrect import setting or faulty source export can scale millimetres as inches. Compare a known model dimension before exporting.
  • Create missing document data: an STP file may contain no title block, dimensions, tolerances, material notes, revision data, or intended projection. Add and verify these manually.
  • Check the PDF: open it in a second PDF viewer, confirm the page size and scale, inspect small features and hidden lines, and print a test page when physical measurements matter.
  • Reduce assembly complexity: suppress unnecessary components or create simplified views if import, rendering, memory use, or PDF size becomes excessive.
  • Keep the source: PDF does not preserve normal CAD editability. Retain the original .stp file and, when applicable, the FreeCAD document or native drawing file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the STP to PDF converter free?

Yes, converting STP to PDF on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my STP file be?

You can upload STP files up to 200 MB and convert up to 5 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert STP to PDF?

No. The STP to PDF conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid STP file for this STP to PDF conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Will my STEP model stay editable after converting it to PDF?

No. The PDF contains flattened drawing views or rendered pages rather than editable STEP geometry and CAD features. It can be reviewed or printed, but changing the model requires the original STEP file or another CAD source.

Does converting STEP to PDF preserve the 3D model and assembly structure?

Usually it produces selected 2D views or a visual rendering, so the full interactive 3D model, assembly relationships, and model properties may not carry over. The result depends on whether the conversion is set up for printable views or a 3D PDF.

Why is my STEP model missing parts or showing blank views in the PDF?

This can happen when some STEP entities, assembly components, or display settings are not supported by the conversion software. Hidden parts, incorrect view orientation, and very small geometry can also make a valid model appear incomplete or blank.

Will the PDF keep the correct scale and dimensions from my STEP file?

Only if drawing views, page size, projection, and print scale are configured correctly. STEP normally stores precise 3D geometry but not a finished drawing layout, so dimensions, annotations, line styles, and page arrangement may need to be created separately.
