What the USDZ format is

USDZ is a packaged, usually uncompressed ZIP-based distribution of Universal Scene Description (USD) data and its referenced resources, including textures and materials. It is used for augmented-reality previews, product visualization, 3D commerce, and Apple Quick Look on iPhone, iPad, and macOS.

Apple Reality Composer and RealityKit workflows commonly create USDZ files; Pixar USD tools, Blender, and other 3D applications can also export or package USD scenes in this format. You may encounter USDZ files in product links, AR models, design reviews, and asset libraries. A USDZ file is intended for 3D viewing and scene interchange, not page layout or document printing.

What the PDF format is

PDF stores fixed pages containing text, vector graphics, raster images, and, in some specialist workflows, embedded 3D data. Standard PDF is useful for printing, approval documents, catalogs, quotations, technical records, and long-term sharing because page appearance is largely independent of the application and operating system.

For most USDZ conversions, the PDF contains one or more rendered images of the model. It does not preserve USD scene structure, AR behaviors, animations, lighting controls, or editable meshes. Specialist 3D PDF files can contain U3D or PRC data, but ordinary PDF converters do not automatically create that kind of interactive document from USDZ.

How to actually convert USDZ to PDF

Convert online without installing software

1. Open the USDZ-to-PDF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .usdz file and select PDF as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated PDF when processing finishes.

The resulting document is generally a rendered representation of the model. If the service offers view, page-size, background, or image-resolution settings, select the desired model angle and use a higher resolution for print output.

Create a controlled PDF from rendered views

1. Open the USDZ file in Apple Quick Look, Reality Composer, Blender, or another USDZ-compatible viewer.
2. Set the camera angle, lighting, background, and model scale.
3. Export or capture one or more high-resolution images. In Blender, use File → Import → Universal Scene Description, set the scene camera, and use Render → Render Image.
4. Combine the rendered PNG or JPEG files into a PDF. On macOS, open the images in Preview, select them in the sidebar, then choose File → Print → PDF → Save as PDF. On Windows, select Microsoft Print to PDF from the print dialog.

This method is preferable for catalogs and technical reviews because it lets you create multiple pages, add captions, include orthographic views, and control image resolution before generating the PDF.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Materials, transparency, environment lighting, cameras, animations, and unsupported USD features may render differently between Quick Look, Blender, and conversion software. Check the output at 100% scale, especially where textures contain small labels or surface details.

For print, render at the intended page size with approximately 300 dpi; for screen-only documents, 150 dpi is usually sufficient. A PDF made from screenshots preserves only the captured viewpoint and cannot be rotated like the original USDZ model.

If an interactive 3D PDF is required, use a workflow that explicitly imports USDZ or an intermediate format and exports U3D or PRC through compatible 3D-PDF software. Renaming .usdz to .pdf, extracting the package, or opening its internal .usdc file in a PDF application does not perform a valid conversion.
