BREP models often need conversion when a CAD viewer is unavailable or a design must be shared as a fixed drawing, printed, or archived. PDF is suitable for documenting the model’s geometry, dimensions, and views, but a normal PDF does not retain editable BREP topology or parametric history.

What the BREP format is

BREP, or boundary representation, describes a 3D solid or surface through its faces, edges, vertices, topology, and geometric definitions. It is used by CAD kernels and mechanical-design applications for precise solid modeling, exchange, inspection, and downstream manufacturing work.

Files with the .brep extension are commonly produced by Open CASCADE-based software, FreeCAD, CAD-exchange utilities, and engineering applications that use Open CASCADE’s native BREP representation. You may encounter them after exporting a part from a parametric CAD system or receiving geometry from a supplier. A BREP file may contain a solid, multiple solids, open surfaces, or geometry that requires repair before it can be displayed correctly.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format used for drawings, inspection records, quotations, manufacturing documentation, and long-term distribution. It preserves page size, linework, text placement, colors, and print settings across operating systems without requiring the original CAD application.

For 3D modeling, the usual result is a 2D PDF containing one or more projected views of the BREP model. Some specialized PDFs can embed a U3D or PRC interactive 3D object, but ordinary PDF viewers and most BREP converters do not create or display that form consistently.

How to convert BREP to PDF

Using FreeCAD for a technical drawing

1. Install a current version of FreeCAD and open the file with File → Open. Select the .brep file. If FreeCAD reports invalid geometry, inspect the shape in the Part workbench and repair or simplify it before creating the drawing.
2. Switch to the TechDraw workbench and create a page with TechDraw → Insert Default Page. Select the imported solid or surface, then insert a view with TechDraw → Insert View.
3. Set the view direction, projection, scale, visible edges, hidden lines, and display mode in the view properties. Add dimensions, labels, centerlines, and a title block if the PDF is intended for manufacturing or inspection.
4. Set the paper size and orientation on the page. Confirm that the model fits inside the printable area and that dimensions remain readable at the selected scale.
5. Export the page with TechDraw → Export Page as PDF, or use the equivalent PDF export command in your FreeCAD version. Save the result with a .pdf filename.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A BREP-to-PDF conversion normally rasterizes or projects the model into page content; it does not transfer feature history, constraints, sketches, solids as editable CAD objects, or exact boundary topology into the PDF. Keep the original BREP for later editing.

BREP files can be kernel-specific even when they use the same extension. A model created with a newer Open CASCADE version may import with missing faces, reversed surfaces, or tolerance errors in older software. Check all views after import, especially section views and hidden edges.

PDF output quality depends on tessellation and drawing settings. Increase display or tessellation accuracy for curved surfaces, use vector line output where possible, and check page scale against a known dimension. If the recipient needs to rotate and inspect the object, export a STEP or native CAD file in addition to the PDF; a standard PDF is primarily a fixed 2D representation.
