BREP files contain 3D boundary geometry, but many browsers, documentation systems, and messaging tools cannot display CAD solids directly. Converting the model to GIF creates a widely supported raster image for previews, diagrams, or quick sharing; the result is a rendered view, not editable 3D geometry.

What the BREP format is

BREP means boundary representation: a solid or surface is described by its vertices, edges, faces, topology, and geometric surfaces. The format is used by CAD kernels and mechanical-design software to preserve precise model shape rather than a pixel image or polygon-only preview.

The .brep extension is commonly associated with Open CASCADE BREP files and applications built on that kernel, including FreeCAD and Open CASCADE utilities. You may encounter it after exporting a part from a CAD system, exchanging geometry between engineering applications, or storing a neutral solid model for later editing.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format identified by .gif. It is suitable for static previews, technical illustrations, browser content, and short animations; it does not retain BREP faces, dimensions, assembly structure, parametric history, or editable CAD data.

GIF supports indexed color with a maximum of 256 colors per frame, lossless LZW compression, and one-bit transparency. Its limited palette works for line drawings and shaded previews but can produce banding or color loss in detailed CAD renders.

How to convert BREP to GIF

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the BREP-to-GIF converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Choose the .brep file and start the conversion.
  3. Download the generated .gif file when processing finishes.

This method is appropriate when you need a quick static preview and do not need to control camera angle, background, lighting, or output dimensions. Do not upload proprietary CAD data unless your organization's data policy permits cloud processing.

Rendering with FreeCAD

  1. Install FreeCAD and open the BREP with File → Open.
  2. Choose the desired camera orientation with View → Standard views, then use View → Fit all to frame the model.
  3. Set display mode, background, and visible edges in the View properties.
  4. Export the viewport as a PNG using FreeCAD's image-export command, such as View → Save image. Use a sufficiently large resolution, for example 1600 × 1200 pixels.
  5. Convert the rendered PNG to GIF with ImageMagick:

magick brep-preview.png -colors 256 brep-preview.gif

For a transparent background, export a transparent image where supported and use:

magick brep-preview.png -alpha on -colors 256 brep-preview.gif

FreeCAD and similar CAD viewers may fail to open a damaged BREP or a file using unsupported kernel entities. Repair or re-export the model in the originating CAD application before rendering.

Creating an animated GIF

A single BREP normally produces a single rendered frame. To show rotation, render several PNG views from different camera angles and combine them:

magick -delay 6 -loop 0 frame-*.png -colors 256 brep-rotation.gif

The filename sequence must sort frames in the intended order, such as frame-001.png, frame-002.png, and frame-003.png. GIF animation increases file size and can appear jerky when too few views are rendered.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion rasterizes exact BREP geometry at a chosen viewport size. Increasing the source model's geometric precision does not improve a GIF unless the model is rendered at a larger pixel resolution.

Use PNG instead of GIF when the image needs more than 256 colors, smooth transparency, gradients, or fine shaded detail. Use the original BREP, STEP, or another CAD exchange file when the recipient must measure, edit, or manufacture from the model.

GIF transparency is binary rather than full alpha, so antialiased edges can show a halo against a different background. For technical drawings, a white background, dark edges, high resolution, and a limited shaded display mode usually produce clearer results than a photorealistic render.
