CAD viewers, documentation systems, and image-based workflows may require a JPEG instead of an editable 3D model. Because JPEG stores pixels rather than 3D geometry, converting a BREP file means rendering or capturing a chosen view of the model.

What the BREP format is

BREP means boundary representation: a solid or surface is described by its vertices, edges, faces, curves, and topology. BREP files are used in mechanical CAD, product design, engineering exchange, and manufacturing workflows where precise geometry must remain editable.

The .brep format is associated with the Open CASCADE Technology (OCCT) modeling kernel and is supported by applications such as FreeCAD and CAD programs built on OCCT. You typically encounter it when exporting a solid or surface model from FreeCAD, Open CASCADE-based software, or a conversion utility. A BREP file can contain exact curves and surfaces, but it does not contain a JPEG-style rendered view.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a raster image format suited to previews, technical documentation, email attachments, web pages, and systems that accept only common image files. It produces small files and is widely supported, but its lossy compression can create artifacts around edges and text.

A JPEG contains a single two-dimensional image. It cannot preserve BREP topology, dimensions, material data, camera-independent geometry, or CAD editability.

How to convert BREP to JPEG

Using FreeCAD

  1. Install and open FreeCAD, then choose File → Open and select the .brep file. FreeCAD imports the BREP geometry into the document.
  2. Switch to the Part workbench if necessary. Select the model and use View → Standard views to choose a front, rear, top, axonometric, or other view.
  3. Fit the model in the viewport with View → Standard views → Fit all. Set the display mode, background, and visibility of construction objects before exporting.
  4. Choose View → Save image if that command is available in your FreeCAD version, select JPEG as the image type, set the output dimensions, and save the result as model.jpg.

FreeCAD's Python console provides a repeatable alternative. After opening the file and selecting the desired view, run:

Gui.activeDocument().activeView().fitAll()
Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.jpg", 2000, 1500, "Current", 96.0)

The command saves the current viewport at 2000 × 1500 pixels. Use a larger width and height for drawings or printed documentation, and set the model's orientation before calling saveImage.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the BREP file, choose JPEG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. Online conversion may use a default camera angle and display style, so use FreeCAD when the exact viewpoint or image resolution matters.

Quality and compatibility limits

JPEG output depends on the selected camera, tessellation quality, lighting, background, viewport size, and compression level; it is not a geometry-preserving conversion. Export at the final required pixel dimensions because enlarging a small JPEG makes curved edges and fine features appear blurred.

For dimensioned drawings, black linework, labels, or archival output, PNG or a vector format generally preserves detail better than JPEG. Keep the original BREP file alongside the JPEG when later editing, measuring, or changing the viewpoint may be necessary.
