A BREP model must be rasterized when a document, presentation, image editor, or device accepts only BMP images. The conversion produces a 2D view of the 3D shape, not another editable CAD model.

What the BREP format is

BREP means boundary representation: the file describes a solid or surface through faces, edges, vertices, curves, and topology. BREP is used by CAD and geometric-kernel software for precise mechanical parts, assemblies, and surfaces. Open CASCADE-based applications, including FreeCAD, can create or import files commonly named .brep or .brp; CAD translators and engineering systems may also export this representation. A BREP file stores geometry rather than a ready-made camera view, so conversion to an image requires rendering or capturing the model from a selected viewpoint.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format supported by Windows software, image editors, documentation tools, and some inspection or desktop-publishing workflows. It can store uncompressed pixel data, which makes decoding simple and preserves every rendered pixel, but BMP files are usually larger than PNG or JPEG files. BMP is suitable when an application specifically requires a bitmap, when lossless pixel storage is needed, or when compatibility with basic graphics software matters.

How to convert BREP to BMP

Using the built-in online converter

  1. Open the BREP-to-BMP converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .brep or .brp file, or use the file-selection control.
  3. Choose BMP as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting bitmap after processing completes.

If the converter provides rendering options, set the viewing orientation, image dimensions, background color, and antialiasing before converting. These settings determine the appearance and resolution of the BMP because the source contains 3D geometry rather than fixed pixels.

Using FreeCAD on a desktop

  1. Install FreeCAD and open the BREP file with File → Open. If the file does not load through the normal dialog, use File → Import.
  2. Fit the object in the viewport with View → Standard views or the fit-all command, then select the required front, top, isometric, or custom view.
  3. Set the display mode, background, and visible objects in the view properties. Hide construction geometry if it should not appear in the image.
  4. Export the viewport with File → Export if BMP is offered, or use FreeCAD’s viewport image/screenshot command and save the filename as model.bmp.

For repeatable exports, FreeCAD’s Python console can save a viewport image with a command such as Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.bmp", 2000, 1500, "Current", True). The exact image options depend on the installed FreeCAD version.

Quality and compatibility limits

The result is a single 2D raster view; it does not retain faces, measurements, topology, editability, or 3D depth. Increase the output width and height before export when the BMP will be printed or zoomed. A transparent background may be lost because many BMP workflows use opaque backgrounds, and color appearance can vary with the selected display mode. If the recipient does not specifically require BMP, PNG generally gives a smaller lossless image, while the original BREP should be retained for future CAD editing.
