3D software and image-editing tools sometimes accept only BMP, while an OFF file contains a polygon mesh rather than a ready-made picture. Converting it therefore means rendering the model from a chosen camera angle and saving that view as a bitmap.
What the OFF format is
OFF, or Object File Format, is a simple polygon-mesh format used in 3D modeling and computational geometry. A standard OFF file is usually plain text containing the vertex coordinates, polygon face definitions, and counts for vertices, faces, and edges.
Geomview and several academic geometry tools use OFF directly; MeshLab can open and export it, and many mesh-processing utilities can read the format. You typically encounter OFF when downloading sample meshes, exchanging geometry between research tools, or exporting a model from a mesh editor.
OFF describes 3D geometry, not a camera, lighting setup, or rendered image. Some files use the related COFF variant to store per-vertex colors, but support for those colors depends on the importing program.
What the BMP format is
BMP is a raster image format widely supported by Windows software, image editors, documentation tools, and older devices. It stores pixels directly, commonly as 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA data.
BMP is useful when compatibility matters or when an application explicitly requires a bitmap. Its usual implementations are uncompressed, so files retain exact pixel data but are often much larger than PNG or JPEG files. BMP stores a 2D image; it cannot preserve vertices, faces, scale, depth, materials, or an editable 3D camera.
How to actually convert OFF to BMP
Using MeshLab
- Install and open MeshLab.
- Choose File → Import Mesh and select
model.off. - Use the trackball controls to choose the required angle, zoom level, and display mode. Enable flat or smooth shading as appropriate.
- Set the background and viewport size if MeshLab's snapshot dialog provides those options.
- Choose File → Save Snapshot, enter
model.bmp, and select BMP when the format selector is available.
The result is a bitmap of the visible MeshLab viewport, not a second 3D model. If the snapshot dialog does not offer BMP, save as PNG and convert that image with an installed image editor such as GIMP, or use the Python method below.
Using Python for repeatable rendering
Install the required packages with:
python -m pip install "trimesh[easy]" pillow
Save this as off_to_bmp.py:
import io
import trimesh
from PIL import Image
mesh = trimesh.load("model.off", force="mesh")
scene = trimesh.Scene(mesh)
png_data = scene.save_image(resolution=(1600, 1200), visible=True)
Image.open(io.BytesIO(png_data)).convert("RGB").save("model.bmp")Run it with:
python off_to_bmp.py
This uses Trimesh's default scene camera and lighting. For production output, set the camera transform, lighting, mesh color, background, and resolution explicitly; headless rendering may also require an OpenGL-compatible environment.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software: upload the OFF file, choose BMP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the rendered result if the service requests image-rendering settings.
Quality and compatibility limits
The conversion is view-dependent. A single BMP shows only one camera angle, and hidden surfaces are discarded. Increase the output resolution before rendering if the image will be printed or enlarged; enlarging a small BMP afterward cannot recover geometric detail.
OFF files generally do not contain the scene information needed for a consistent render, so different programs can produce different scale, orientation, colors, lighting, and background. Check the model for inverted face normals, missing textures, and unsupported COFF vertex colors before exporting.
Use 24-bit RGB BMP for the broadest compatibility. A BMP normally has no useful transparency in older applications, and its uncompressed size can be substantial; PNG is usually preferable unless the receiving program specifically requires BMP.
