A BMP image is useful when a 3DM model must be viewed, printed, attached to documentation, or opened by software that cannot read 3D geometry. The conversion creates a raster snapshot or render of the model; it does not preserve editable surfaces, solids, layers, or 3D coordinates.

What the 3DM format is

3DM is the native file format of Rhinoceros, commonly called Rhino, and is based on the OpenNURBS model format. It stores NURBS curves and surfaces, solid geometry, polygon meshes, layers, object attributes, annotations, blocks, views, and, depending on the file, materials and render settings.

Rhino creates 3DM files for industrial design, architecture, jewelry, engineering, product visualization, and general CAD modeling. You may encounter them when receiving a Rhino model, exporting from a Rhino-based application, or opening a project intended for later editing rather than simple image viewing.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels, commonly with 24-bit RGB color or 32-bit color including an alpha channel. It is supported by Windows graphics software, many image editors, document tools, and some older print or manufacturing workflows.

BMP is useful when compatibility and uncompressed pixel data matter. It is usually larger than PNG or JPEG because it generally applies no compression, and it cannot contain 3D geometry, camera controls, selectable edges, layers, or model metadata.

How to actually convert 3DM to BMP

Using Rhino

  1. Open the .3dm file in Rhino.
  2. Choose the required viewport and set its display mode, such as Shaded, Rendered, Arctic, or Wireframe. Adjust the camera, object visibility, background, and display color as needed.
  3. Run Rhino’s ViewCaptureToFile command, or use the viewport capture command from the View menu.
  4. Set the output width and height in pixels. Use a larger resolution than the final document size if the image will be printed or cropped.
  5. Select BMP as the file type, choose a destination such as model-preview.bmp, and save the capture.
  6. Open the resulting BMP in an image editor to crop it or convert it to another raster format if the destination application accepts PNG or JPEG instead.

For a realistic result, use Rhino’s render workflow first: configure lights, materials, and the camera, render the view, then save the rendered image as BMP from the render window. A viewport capture is faster and is usually sufficient for technical previews.

Using the online converter

You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the 3DM file, select BMP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated image. Check the preview and output dimensions afterward, because an image conversion represents the model from a selected view rather than exporting the complete 3D scene.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The result depends on the selected camera, viewport mode, render resolution, anti-aliasing, lighting, and background. A 3DM file containing multiple views does not automatically produce multiple BMP files; capture each required view separately.

BMP has no standard mechanism for retaining Rhino layers, object selection, dimensions, hidden geometry, or editable vector edges. If lines and labels must remain sharp at different sizes, export a vector format such as PDF or SVG when the receiving software supports it. If the target only needs a smaller photographic preview, PNG or JPEG will usually reduce file size more effectively than BMP.
