What the FBX format is

FBX is Autodesk’s interchange format for 3D scenes. It can contain polygon meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, skeletons, skin weights, and animation data in one file.

Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Cinema 4D, and many game-engine pipelines create or import FBX files. You typically encounter FBX when receiving an exported model, moving assets between 3D applications, or preparing a scene for a game or visualization project.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format commonly used for simple previews, Windows-oriented workflows, technical documentation, and applications that require bitmap input. It stores pixels with little or no compression, making files easy to decode but often much larger than PNG or JPEG files.

BMP does not preserve meshes, materials, animation, cameras, or editable 3D data. The conversion therefore produces a rendered image of one frame and one viewpoint, not a 2D version of the complete FBX scene.

How to convert FBX to BMP

Using Blender

1. Install and open Blender.
2. Import the scene through File → Import → FBX (.fbx).
3. Check the imported model in the 3D Viewport. If the FBX contains no usable camera or lights, add them with Add → Camera and Add → Light.
4. Position the camera. Select the desired view in the viewport and use Ctrl+Alt+Num0 to align the active camera, or position the camera manually.
5. Open Output Properties and set the render resolution, such as 1920 × 1080. Select BMP as the output file format and specify an output folder.
6. Choose the required frame if the FBX contains animation, then render with Render → Render Image or F12.
7. In the Render Result window, use Image → Save As, select BMP if Blender asks for a format, enter a filename such as fbx-render.bmp, and save it.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Rendering quality depends on the imported scene rather than on the BMP container. Missing texture files, unsupported shaders, absent lights, incorrect scale, or FBX features not supported by the importer can change the result before it is saved.

Use a higher render resolution when the bitmap will be printed or enlarged. BMP files are comparatively large because they generally do not use efficient compression, and support for alpha transparency varies between BMP readers; use a solid background when compatibility matters.

If the FBX contains animation, convert each required frame separately or render an image sequence. BMP cannot retain the animation, scene hierarchy, camera data, or 3D editability.
